Chapter 24 Follow Them

“Fine. If you don’t believe me, then check the security footage

“Uncle, Auntie…” Ivy was carried out by Louisa just then, her eyes and nose red.

Her little pant legs were still rolled up, a small patch of red showing on her chubby thigh, and Katherine’s heart clenched at the sight.

Ivy lifted her hand, wanting Katherine to hold her and to check her injury.

But when she saw Lucas, she got scared he might notice something, so she gave up and obediently stayed in Louisa’s arms.

Seeing the burn on Ivy’s leg, a sudden wave of tenderness rose in Lucas’s chest.

“Mr. Grant, we’ve rinsed the burned area with water, but it’d be safer to have her checked at the hospital, Louisa said.

“Alright.” Lucas took Ivy from her arms and glanced at Katherine. “You’re coming too. We’ll check the footage after we’re back.”

“And after we’re back, the footage won’t just disappear, will it?”

Katherine glanced pointedly at Rachel.

Rachel bit her lip.

If it weren’t for the child being the priority, Katherine would’ve checked the footage before leaving.

But now that she’d said this out loud, if the video really vanished, it would be Rachel admitting guilt without a word.

Katherine gave her one last look and walked out with them.

Following Lucas out of the Grant Estate, Katherine suddenly caught sight of two small figures darting by.

She knew those silhouettes too well.

At the hospital, Lucas carried Ivy in front, while Katherine walked behind. Ivy rested Lucas’s shoulder, secretly exchanging looks with Katherine.

Katherine gestured to Ivy.

Lucas turned his head, and Katherine immediately straightened up.

They registered and went into the doctor’s office

Once Lucas was gone, mother and daughter patted their chests and let out a synchronized sigh of relief.

While the doctor examined the burns, Katherine borrowed a charger from the office, powered up her phone, and called Megan.

Megan was still at work. She answered while organizing files. “Katherine, how is it? Did Lucas let you go?”

From her tone, Megan clearly hadn’t realized the three kids had already snuck to Crestburg.

“They… What… Then what do we do now? I pretended to be you and picked up Ivy before, so Lucas thinks I’m Ivy’s mom. I have to be the one to pick her up.”

Katherine sighed. “There’s no other way.”

Katherine hung up and finally relaxed.

Once Megan returned, she could take Ivy away.

After the doctor examined them, both Katherine and Ivy were fine. They’d rinsed the burns quickly, and the injuries weren’t serious. The doctor prescribed burn ointment.

Leaving the exam room, Katherine held Ivy’s hand and said, “Ivy, later tell Lucas you contacted your mommy with your watch phone and that she will come get you soon, okay?”

“Okay.” Ivy nodded. “I got it, Mommy.”

Downstairs, Lucas went to the hospital supermarket to buy candy.
