Katherine used to be so well-behaved and so sensible. She knew he was busy, so she solved everything she could on her own-and the things she couldn’t solve, she solved anyway.
Maybe it was her quiet competence that allowed him to become increasingly dismissive and uncaring.
He had subconsciously assumed that no matter how much he neglected her, she would never complain, never leave.
Disappointment builds. Quietly. Slowly. Once enough of it builds up, someone with her independent personality would simply leave.
Why didn’t he want a divorce?
Maybe because her gentle, sensible nature made her a suitable wife.
Maybe because Elijah liked her, and she could make the elders happy.
Maybe because of a man’s possessiveness.
In the first year after she left, Lucas had a dream In it, Katherine was beautiful-wearing a white dress, holding a child’s hand, with another man standing beside her. They looked happy. But the man was not him.
He woke with a start and smoked through the entire night. He still couldn’t accept that Katherine might become another man’s wife.
Maybe it was just pride. Possession. Ego.
Lucas raised his hand and pinched the bridge of his nose. Looking at the divorce agreement gave him a pounding headache.
When Fred came over, he took one look at the oppressive aura around Lucas, then spotted the divorce papers on the table. A chill ran straight down his spine.
Great. He’d walked right into the line of fire…
Why did he have to come over right now?
Fred spoke carefully. “Mr. Grant, Ms. Pearce has left.”
Lucas said nothing. The oppressive silence only nade Fred feel colder.
Katherine didn’t go back to the private room. Megan had texted saying that to avoid any

Katherine walked out of the restaurant and had barely taken two steps when a car sped straight toward her, looking like it was about to hit her.
Katherine reacted quickly, jumping back, but the car still brushed against her clothes.
The speed turned her face pale. Two women stepped out of the car.
Rachel took off her sunglasses and stood by the car with her chin held high, looking smug.
If it were anyone else, Katherine might have guessed it was an accident or bad driving, but seeing Rachel, she was 100% certain it was intentional.
Katherine’s expression went cold.
The person with Rachel was Chloe.
Chloe had a triumphant look on her face. She smiled and said, “Katherine, what a coincidence.”
Coincidence?
Really?
Katherine didn’t believe in such things.
They must have tracked her here through Lucas
“Katherine, you sure have fast reflexes.” Rachel stood there with her brows raised. With no one else around, she didn’t bother pretending anymore, letting her malice show freely.
Katherine narrowed her eyes. “You tried to hit me.”
“Oh, come on. Don’t accuse me. My hands just didn’t cooperate, and I accidentally swerved a bit.”
Katherine stepped forward and raised a brow. “Is that so?”
Rachel curved her lips. “That’s right—”
Smack.
Rachel took the slap dead-on and nearly fell to the ground.
She clutched her face with her head turned to the side. It took a long moment before she could even react.

Rachel raised her head. She never imagined Katherine would actually dare to slap her in public.
Her ears rang. She bit her lip. “Katherine, you hit me.”
“Oh, come on. Don’t accuse me. My hand just didn’t cooperate, and it accidentally bumped your face.”
“You-!”
Katherine threw her own words right back at her. Rachel was so angry that her face twisted. She raised her hand to slap Katherine back.
Katherine raised her arm, caught her wrist clearly, and backhanded her across the other cheek.
There. Now it was even.
Rachel seemed to have a penchant for being hit lately. The marks from last time had barely faded, and here she was earning more.
Rachel clutched her face, both eyes red, tears pooling in them. But just then, her gaze caught the man walking out behind them.
