No time to think it through. His ride was already waiting out front. Fred jumped in and went after Lucas.

Rachel was still shaking. She had no idea how much Fred had heard. She picked up her phone again, voice dropped low. “Someone’s looking for you. Watch yourselves.”

“Got it.”

Rachel hung up, deleted the call log, and the venom in her eyes deepened.

Meanwhile, Katherine was flooring it, pushing the car as fast as it would go toward the location pin. The area was remote. When she arrived, she spotted the car from the surveillance footage parked right there, next to an abandoned shack.

Katherine threw herself out of the car and yanked open the vehicle’s door. Empty.

Her gaze shifted to the crumbling shack.

A chill crawled up from somewhere deep inside her.

Katherine drew a long breath, picked up a thick tree branch from the ground, gripped it tight, and walked toward the shack. At the doorway, she shoved the door open with everything she had…

What she saw made her pupils blow wide.

A wreck of a building, with holes in every wall. Junk piled across the floor. And in the p of it all-a fresh pool of blood, sickeningly vivid against the filth.

A shoe lay among the debris. White, stained with blood. The sight of it made her sto drop.

Katherine’s mind blanked. She crossed the room in long strides and picked up the s

“Ms. Pearce…

“This is Ivy’s shoe… it’s Ivy’s… shoe…”

The officers took in the scene. Years of experience told them exactly what this might mean.

The child might already be dead.

The realization settled over everyone like a weight. Faces went grim.

They’d arrived too late.

Katherine stared at the shoe in her hands. Her breathing was shaking. Tears sat in her eyes but wouldn’t fall. The officer beside her was talking-mouth moving, words coming out-but Katherine couldn’t hear any of it.

All she knew was that the trail had gone cold. Ivy could be alive or dead, and she had no way of knowing.

The police needed to process the scene. They asked her to step outside.

Katherine turned, body stiff, limbs wooden. A searing pain split through her skull. Her mind. flooded with every possible nightmare of what vy might be going through.

She couldn’t bear to imagine it. Ivy was so small. So small, and this was happening to her. Alive, or not-she didn’t know.

Alive. Or not.

That phrase hit her like a physical blow. Her body swayed hard. She grabbed the door frame just in time to stay upright.

It was a long time before she could lift her feet again. She dragged herself outside.

The sky pressed down, dark and heavy.

Then, her phone rang.

It rang

for a long time before Katherine registered it. She pulled it out and held it to b

“Hello…”

“Mommy, did you find Ivy?”

The words split her chest open. Her throat felt stuffed with cotton-she couldn’t make a sound.

After a long pause, she managed, “Not … yet…”

“Mommy, we found something new. It’s a GPS signal from Ivy’s watch. Julian spoke fast.

“GPS?” Katherine’s strangled voice trembled.

Yeah, check your phone, Mommy. Quick.”

Ivy’s watch was synced to Katherine’s phone. She could check the location anytime.

Julian and Ethan had tried the watch tracker right away, but at first, there was nothing-no signal at all.

Everyone had assumed the watch was either broken or the kidnappers had tossed it.

But on a second attempt, the boys picked up a signal.

Katherine’s trembling hands gripped the phone She tapped into the app. The dot was there -the location that had vanished was back. Life looded into her dead eyes. She spun around and ran to the police. “Ivy’s location.”
