Her voice was so faint that even with the volume maxed out, Katherine couldn’t catch the words that followed.
“Ivy? Ivy? Can you still hear me?” Katherine asked frantically.
Beside her, an officer was already hooking Katherine’s phone up to their equipment.
But from the other end-nothing.
A few seconds of silence. Katherine pressed the phone to her ear and heard the roar of wind rushing past, and the creak-groan of a car rattling over a rough road.
So, Ivy was in a car.
If she’d managed to call, that meant the kidnappers couldn’t see her or hear her talking.
Which meant Ivy was in the trunk.
“Ivy, sweetheart, don’t fall asleep. Mommy’s coming to save you. Don’t sleep. Please, don’t sleep …
“Okay… I… I will be a good girl…”
Her voice was almost gone.
She must have used the very last of her strength to power on her watch and make the call.
The thought nearly drove Katherine insane. She spun around and ran for her car. The police tried to stop her-too dangerous.
But nothing on earth was going to stand between Katherine and her daughter right no
Katherine got in the car, took a sharp, beautiful urn, and tore out of there. The car van in a blink.
The police scrambled into their vehicles and followed.
By the time Lucas arrived, all he found were officers cordoning off the scene.
His face went completely still. When he saw the blood splattered across the room, his dar pupils shrank.

He had originally thought this was a standard kidnapping, but the reality was far more severe than he had imagined.
He couldn’t figure out why anyone would kidnap Ivy.
Fred went and talked to the officers, then came back. “Mr. Grant, the police say Ivy’s situation isn’t good. She might…”
“Might what?”
Meeting Lucas’s gaze, Fred felt the blood drain from his own face.
“Might…” Might not make it.
Fred clenched his jaw. He couldn’t bring himself to say the rest.
Looking at the scene, Lucas didn’t need him to.
A sudden, violent stab of pain hit his chest.
That’s strange.
This was a child who had nothing to do with him. And yet, hearing she might be dead made his heart ache in a way he couldn’t explain.
“I got Ivy’s location from the police.”
Lucas turned on his heel. “Then, what are we standing here for? Go.”
Meanwhile, Ivy lay in the trunk, listening to the howling wind and, faintly, the sound of people arguing up front.
“You two idiots-you started cutting her up right there? Do you have a death wish?” A woman’s voice, sharp and furious.
“We were following the client’s orders. This kid’s worth good money. The deposit al half a million.”
“Money over brains. You hack her arms and legs off like that-you think you can get of this city? Next time the money shows up, youll be too dead to spend it.”
“Then what do we do, Sabrina?”
“What do you think? Lucky I stopped you in time. I’ve already booked passage on a ship head for the harbor. The client said she never comes back-fine. We get on that ship, ge of the city, and then we deal with her.”

“Got it.”
Ivy shifted her little arm. She’d been struck on the forehead-the wound was bleeding steadily. Everything felt dizzy and heavy. Her eyelids kept dragging shut.
But Ivy gritted her teeth, clenched her tiny fists and held on.
Because Katherine told her to wait. Katherine said she was coming. She told her to not fall asleep….
Ivy was going to be a good girl. She was going to listen to Katherine.
She wanted to call Katherine again, but her watch had already died.
All she could do was curl up and remember what Katherine had told her: if you’re hurt, press down on the wound to stop the bleeding.
Ivy raised her little hand and pressed it to her forehead.
After a while, the car stopped.
Ivy heard footsteps coming toward her. She shrank back, terrified. Then, the trunk opened and a beam of light hit her face.
