Lucas’s eyes were cold. “You’re wrong about everything, Katherine. You keep tormenting her, and you think that’s acceptable? Did you really think I’d forgotten about those two slaps outside the restaurant?”
Katherine met his stare without flinching.
Apologize to the woman who tried to kill her daughter? Not in this lifetime.
Rachel, ever the peacemaker, tugged at Lucas’s sleeve. “Lucas, it’s fine. I’m okay. Please don’t fight with Katherine because of me.”
Her soft, reasonable tone only made Katherine look harsher by comparison.
Lucas had already been on edge for days. Now Katherine’s defiance pushed him over the brink. “If you don’t apologize, I’ll throw you back in the water.”
Katherine’s pupils contracted. A wave of bitterness surged through her chest.
Rachel’s lips curved faintly. She stepped forward and crouched in front of Katherine again. “It’s really okay, Lucas. If she doesn’t want to apologize, don’t force her. I’m fine.”
She gripped Katherine’s arm, her nails digging viciously into the soft flesh.
Katherine winced and shoved her away.
Rachel stumbled again, but this time Lucas caught her.
She went pale, tears springing to her eyes as if terrified, her expression pitiful. “It’s okay…” she whispered.
“God, you’re such a dramatic cunt.”
The curse slipped out before Katherine could stop it. Rachel’s manipulations were somet Katherine knew she’d never master.
Lucas whipped around, his gaze so cold it raised goosebumps. “You really think I won’t t you, Katherine?”
He steadied Rachel, then strode toward Katherine, grabbing her arm and hauling her up. you won’t learn, I’ll teach you.”
Katherine’s heart plummeted. “What are you doing?”
“What do you think?”

Her eyes widened in horror. She didn’t even have time to struggle before he hurled her straight back into the ocean.
Terror flooded her face as she hit the water.
Splash
Katherine thrashed, panic flooding her veins.
He knew she couldn’t swim. Hours ago, he’d demanded to know why she’d risked drowning to save someone.
Now, for Rachel, he’d thrown her in herself.
Using her greatest weakness as his weapon.
Saltwater burned her nose, her throat, drowning her lungs. Her already heavy body couldn’t fight the waves for long.
On shore. Lucas’s hands trembled. The instant he let go of her, regret had clawed up his spine. He wanted to dive in after her.
But before he could move, a deafening roar split the air. A silver helicopter descended overhead.
It hadn’t even fully landed when a man jumped from it mid-air.
Dressed in black from head to toe, radiating a dangerous edge, he strode forward without hesitation and plunged into the water. Moments later, he surfaced with Katherine in his
arms.
She coughed violently, choking on seawater, pale and trembling and heartbreakingly fragile.
The man clicked his tongue, sharp eyes going cold. “Leave me, and this is what happ
Katherine could only cough, too exhausted to speak.
His eyes darkened. He scooped her up effortlessly, one arm beneath her knees, the of bracing her back. His gaze swept across the beach like a drawn blade. “What are you for? Teach them a lesson.”
The men who’d followed him from the helicopter immediately surrounded Lucas and Rachel.
The atmosphere turned razor-sharp.
Rachel panicked, pressing herself against Lucas back. “Lucas, who are they?”

Lucas showed no fear, only watched the stranger holding Katherine with murder in his eyes.
She lay weakly against his chest, her head resting against him without resistance. One arm even draped naturally over his shoulder.
They knew each other very well, it seemed.
Lucas’s jaw tightened. The cold radiating from him made even Rachel shiver. Lucas? What’s
wrong?
In the distance. Fred spotted the confrontation and rushed over with several men of his own In seconds, the two sides faced off.
“Mr. Lucas, what’s going on here?”
Lucas didn’t care who they were. He only saw therine in another man’s arms, and it made his chest burn. “Put her down. She’s my wife.”
Marsh laughed-a cold, dismissive sound. “The hell you yapping about?”
