The thought lodged like a splinter in Lucas’s mind. The more he turned it over, the darker his expression became. Rage surged through him, drowning out whatever flicker of concern might have been buried beneath it.
In Marsh’s arms. Katherine took a long moment to steady her breathing. When she finally came to, her face was white as paper, lips tinged faintly blue. She looked frighteningly fragile.
“Marsh.”
He looked down at her. “Feeling better?”
Her eyelids half-closed, she nodded.
“Got enough strength left? I can settle the score for you.”
Katherine pressed her lips together. She tried to speak, but another fit of coughing seized her. Her throat burned, her stomach cramped from the saltwater.
But that pain was nothing compared to the agony that ripped through her chest when Lucas threw her into the ocean.
She squeezed her eyes shut, but the tears trapped there escaped anyway.
“Let’s go. I can’t look at them right now,” she whispered, her voice raspy.
“Not happening. Even my pets wouldn’t be treated like that. And you matter to me.”
Marsh lifted his gaze, violence simmering in his eyes.
Across the sand, Rachel steadied herself and studied the scene carefully.
This man didn’t look ordinary.
How did Katherine know someone like him?
And he’d actually come to rescue her?
What were they to each other?
Bitter jealousy coiled in Rachel’s chest. Women like Katherine deserved to be despised discarded, abandoned by everyone.

She smoothed her expression and stepped forward, her voice gentle and measured. “Sir, I think there’s been a misunderstanding. Katherine and I are friends. She has a bit of a temper. and she went too far just now. Lucas was only standing up for me.”
Marsh raised an eyebrow at her nauseating performance. “Is that so? So she had it coming?”
Rachel’s heart leapt. This was going exactly as she’d expected.
Between her and Katherine, everyone always chose her.
She would strip away everyone Katherine had, leaving her with nothing.
Rachel tilted her chin slightly. “Katherine was out of line, but I’m not holding it against her. We’re friends. after all.”
Marsh gave a soft laugh, like he had just heard the punchline to a private joke.
“How generous of you.”
Rachel smiled demurely. “I’m not the type to pick. Unlike Katherine … well, never mind. She just has a difficult personality.”
“Maybe she does.”
Marsh’s gaze drifted over her lazily. “But you know what? My temper’s even worse.”
“What?” Rachel blinked, not quite catching it.
Marsh gently set Katherine down. One of his men immediately moved to support her Marsh, meanwhile, rolled back the cuffs of his black shirt with unhurried precisio crooked a finger at Rachel.

“What?”
Rachel blinked.
By the time Lucas realized what the man was about to do, it was already too late to Rachel-she had stepped in.

Before she could react. Marsh grabbed her armand delivered a swift, brutal kick.
The movement was clean and efficient, so fast that no one could intercept him.
Splash! Rachel hit the water hard.
She couldn’t swim either. The impact knocked the air from her lungs. Her mouth opened in shock, and seawater rushed in.
She struggled wildly, choking, screaming for help.
Lucas’s expression snapped into focus. He moved instantly, only to be blocked by Marsh.
Want to save her? Let’s see if you can.”
Marsh rarely dirtied his own hands-unless it involved Katherine.
The two men collided, fists and fury. Neither had ever been the type to back down, and now neither held back.
Katherine watched, a bitter laugh escaping her
