Aunt Veronica smiled and nodded.
For some reason...
I found myself paying attention to how little he ate.
Alexander had always been a picky eater.
Just like Aimy.
Even before, he never ate much.
But today...
He barely touched the food before quietly putting down his utensils.
Even Aunt Veronica seemed slightly surprised, though she wisely chose not to comment.
Alexander stood up to put the used container away, but Aunt Veronica quickly reached for it.
"Just give it to me. It’s alright."
He didn’t insist.
He simply handed it to her before returning to his seat.
As I watched him...
For the first time since seeing him again after two years...
I truly noticed how much he had changed.
He had become noticeably slimmer.
Dark circles rested beneath his eyes.
It looked as though he’d tried his best to hide them...
But I still noticed.
Everything about him seemed different.
Even his usually cold eyes had become sharper...
More intimidating...
More tired.
Except...
Whenever he looked at Aimy.
Every single time his eyes landed on her, they softened ever so slightly.
"I’ll take these home for now."
Aunt Veronica’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
She turned toward Alexander.
"Alexander, you look exhausted. It’s already getting late. You should return to the hotel and get some rest. Anna can stay here with Alicia."
Alexander shook his head.
"It’s alright."
"I’ll stay here."
"You and Anna should go back."
"But you’ve been here since....."
"It’s my responsibility to look after Aimy."
His voice was calm...
But firm enough to leave no room for argument.
Aunt Veronica let out a quiet sigh before glancing at me.
I gave her a small nod, silently telling her it was alright.
She finally turned toward the bed.
"Come on, Anna. Let’s head back."
Anna didn’t argue.
She simply stood up.
Before leaving, however, she shot me one of her usual playful, teasing looks.
I pretended not to notice it.
After saying their goodbyes, the two of them left the hospital room.
Soon...
Only Alexander and I remained.
Aimy, whose mood had improved after talking with Anna, had already fallen asleep again.
I quietly turned my attention back to her...
Trying to avoid the awkward silence that had settled between Alexander and me.
Suddenly, Aimy stirred in her sleep.
She shifted once.
Then again.
I immediately hurried over to the bed.
"Aimy?"
Alexander also rose from the couch.
"What happened?" he asked.
Before I could answer, Aimy suddenly sat upright.
The next second, she leaned over the side of the bed and began vomiting.
"Aimy!"
I quickly held her trembling little body, supporting her as she continued throwing up.
My heart tightened painfully.
What was happening again?
Almost immediately, the door burst open.
Several hurried footsteps entered the room.
"Please step away from the patient."
I couldn’t even process what was happening.
My mind had gone completely blank.
The doctor gently took Aimy from my arms before looking at me.
"Mrs. Alicia, we’re going to take care of her."
"Trust us."
Seeing the calm determination in his eyes, my fingers slowly loosened around Aimy almost unconsciously.
Before I realized it, a pair of strong arms had gently steadied me.
Alexander.
He carefully guided me outside the room.
Even after we stepped into the corridor, he didn’t let go.
Almost instinctively...
I leaned against him, resting my forehead against his chest.
The familiar warmth surrounding me made my eyes sting once again.
I felt his body stiffen for the briefest moment.
Then...
He silently pulled me a little closer, gently resting his chin against the top of my head.
