Third Person POV
Even after Alexander left Rosewood Town, he had already instructed Herbert to oversee a thorough investigation inside the mansion.
At first, they carried it out discreetly, questioning no one and simply observing the staff. But after several days without finding anything suspicious, Herbert decided to widen the investigation and formally question everyone working in the house.
Herbert made sure no member of his own family was excluded from the investigation.
Just as expected, nothing suspicious was found.
However, one particular staff member gradually caught his attention.
Agnes.
She had become unusually nervous over the past few days.
At first Herbert dismissed it as fear brought on by the investigation.
But the longer he watched her, the more suspicious she became.
Unable to ignore his instincts, he hired a private investigator to quietly look into her background.
The results arrived two days later.
Herbert skimmed through the report before his eyes narrowed.
"Isn’t this Chairman Blackwood’s assistant?" he asked, looking up at the investigator.
"Yes, sir."
The investigator nodded.
"And according to my findings, there is no legitimate reason Agnes should have received such a large transfer from Miss Karen."
Herbert frowned.
Agnes had worked in the mansion for years.
Why would Alexander’s assistant transfer such a large amount of money to an ordinary servant?
And as far as he could remember, Karen had never been to the mansion before.
He wasn’t ready to jump to conclusions.
Instead, he immediately informed Alexander.
To his surprise...
Alexander wasn’t shocked.
He simply accepted the information before saying calmly,
"Have the police question Agnes again."
Meanwhile Agnes had been terrified from the very beginning.
Ever since Karen had paid her to add a mysterious substance to Aimy’s juice, the memory of watching the little girl collapse had haunted her every waking moment.
She had expected the police to arrest her immediately.
When nothing happened, she had been relieved.
But relief never erased guilt.
Instead, it only grew heavier with each passing day.
The worst part was Karen.
She had promised to pay the remaining money after everything was over, but after the incident she stopped answering Agnes’s calls altogether.
Eventually...
She blocked her.
Alexander’s POV
Just as I suspected...
Karen’s background was far from ordinary.
Her father was Sebastian Newton, the owner of a successful chemical manufacturing company.
Although it wasn’t among the largest corporations in the country, it was influential enough to make me question her motives.
She had taken advantage of the fact that she had studied abroad and wasn’t well known in Velaridge City.
No one had recognized who she was when she joined Blackwood Dominion.
Including me.
When Karen first started working under me, I had never cared about her background.
As long as she was capable, that was enough.
Looking back now...
The signs had always been there.
Unlike every other employee, Karen never seemed intimidated by me.
She spoke confidently.
Sometimes too confidently.
At first I dismissed it as youthful confidence.
But after she crossed the line the other day, something about her behavior began to bother me.
That was when I ordered Henry to investigate her properly.
Now...
Aimy’s poisoning was leading straight back to her.
My jaw clenched.
Whoever had sent Karen into my company...
Whatever their objective...
I would uncover the truth.
And when I did...
They would pay dearly.
That night, despite the anger simmering inside me, memories of the day slowly calmed my mind.
