She did it so carefully that anyone who wasn’t paying close attention would have missed it.
Then she turned and walked back toward the living room, where we had met earlier.
I dragged the footage forward.
A few moments later, another staff member approached the vessel. She slid her hand into the vassel and picked up the little bottle without hesitation before carrying it back into the kitchen.
I closed my eyes briefly, frustration washing over me.
These were people I had trusted.
The young woman had only started working at the villa not long ago.Carefully after she made sure no one was watching, she poured its contents into the apple juice before asking another staff member to serve it.
Everything finally made sense.
Only Karen could have known about such a rare substance—or had easy access to it. Considering her father’s chemical manufacturing company, obtaining it wouldn’t have been difficult.
My expression darkened.
I had never imagined someone would dare target my family right under my nose...
Using my own employees.
Herbert had said Karen wanted Alicia out of my life.
But Alicia had never known Karen before they met in Rosewood town.
So why was she targeting her?
And if Alicia was her objective...
Why poison Aimy instead?
The questions circled endlessly through my mind until I finally picked up my phone and dialed a familiar number.
The call was answered on the first ring.
"Chairman Blackwood. What an honor to receive your call."
"Thank you, Mr. Newton," I replied evenly.
"I’ve been watching how Blackwood Dominion Enterprises has expanded under your leadership. You truly have a remarkable talent for business."
He was trying to flatter me.
"Are you implying the company wasn’t in good hands before?"
"I wouldn’t dare say that," he replied hurriedly. "Blackwood Dominion has always been in excellent hands."
I smiled faintly.
"You’re doing quite well yourself, Mr. Newton. Newton Industries has become one of Velaridge City’s more successful chemical manufacturers."
I paused deliberately.
"It makes me wonder... have you considered expanding into other markets?"
He chuckled.
"That’s quite the compliment coming from you, Chairman Blackwood. But no, not at the moment. Expanding now would be far too risky for us."
"I see."
I leaned back in my chair.
"It must be difficult handling everything on your own."
"It certainly is," he admitted with a laugh. "Fortunately, my daughter will be returning from abroad soon. She’ll be helping me manage the company."
I pretended to sound mildly curious.
"I wasn’t aware you had a daughter."
"Yes." Pride filled his voice immediately. "She’s been studying overseas for several years, but she’ll be coming home soon. When she does, I’ll be sure to introduce her to you."
"I’d like that."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, I ended the call.
I stared at the silent phone in my hand.
So...
Sebastian didn’t seem to know.
That was the only explanation that made sense.
As ambitious as he was, I knew him well enough to know he wouldn’t willingly provoke the Blackwood family.
Very few people in Velaridge City would.
Which left only one question.
Why was Karen here?
Even so, I instructed Henry to continue keeping an eye on both Sebastian Newton and his daughter.
People change.
You never know when someone’s true intentions might surface, and I wasn’t about to lower my guard—not now.
Just then, a knock sounded on the study door.
"Come in," I said without looking up from my phone.
A moment later, I heard familiar footsteps stop in front of my desk.
I looked up.
Alicia stood there.
The moment our eyes met, my expression softened unconsciously. She held my gaze for a brief second before looking away.
"Do you need something?" I asked quietly.
She hesitated.
It was obvious she wasn’t sure how to begin.
