After my shower, I went to Aimy’s room, only to find that she was already awake. Maria had helped her get dressed and was holding her hand as they walked out.
"Good morning, Maria," I greeted with a smile.
"Good morning, Mrs Alicia."
The moment Aimy saw me, she let go of Maria’s hand and ran straight toward me.
I bent down and scooped her into my arms.
"Did you sleep well, sweetheart?"
She nodded enthusiastically, wrapping her little arms around my neck as we headed downstairs together.
By the time we reached the dining room, breakfast had already been served.
Alexander wasn’t there.
Since it was Monday, I assumed our usual routine had resumed—that he had already left for the company before we woke up.
Just as I was about to take my seat, I heard footsteps.
I looked up.
Alexander was descending the staircase, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit. His raven-black hair was neatly combed back, every strand in place, making him look as composed and refined as ever.
Somehow, I didn’t realize I was staring until he lifted his head.
Our eyes met.
I quickly looked away.
But something about him seemed different today.
His usually striking blue eyes looked darker, shadowed by exhaustion.
"Good morning," he greeted.
Before I could answer, Aimy beat me to it.
"Good morning, Daddy!"
Her cheerful voice echoed through the dining room.
I couldn’t help smiling.
Ever since yesterday, she seemed to love calling him Daddy. She used every opportunity she got, and somehow, every time she did, Alexander’s expression softened.
He leaned over and kissed her cheek.
"Did you sleep well?"
She nodded happily.
Only then did his gaze shift to me.
I offered him a faint smile before lowering my eyes and serving Aimy her breakfast.
Alexander quietly did the same, and soon the room was filled with nothing but the soft clinking of cutlery and Aimy’s occasional chatter.
As we ate, I found myself stealing glances at him.
The closer I looked...
the more exhausted he appeared.
It wasn’t only his eyes.
Dark shadows rested beneath them, making it obvious he hadn’t slept well.
Even his expression lacked its usual calmness.
"Are you alright?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"I’m fine," he replied without looking up.
I frowned.
"But you don’t look fine."
This time, he raised his head and looked at me.
"You look exhausted."
"Didn’t you get any sleep last night?"
Only after the words left my mouth did I realize how worried I sounded.
A slow smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.
"I didn’t know you cared about me this much."
I narrowed my eyes immediately.
"Do you know how terrible you look?"
"I’m just worried you might scare away your employees when you get to the company."
His smile widened.
Then he leaned slightly closer, lowering his voice so only I could hear.
"Then I’ll tell them to blame it on my wife."
I blinked in confusion.
"What?"
"If she hadn’t left me longing for two years..."
"...maybe I wouldn’t look like this."
For a second, I couldn’t understand what he meant.
Then...
Realization hit.
Heat rushed to my face.
I shifted awkwardly and suddenly choked on absolutely nothing.
I reached for the glass of water in front of me.
