One of the security guards stood nearby.
"Hasn’t Alexander come back yet?" I asked.
Before the guard could answer, a familiar voice called out.
"Alicia."
I looked up.
Alexander was standing a short distance away.
Our eyes met.
He looked even more exhausted than he had that morning.
His shoulders were tense, and his eyes seemed darker than usual.
"You’re back," I said softly.
"Mm."
He walked toward me.
As he drew closer, the scent of his expensive cologne mixed with cigarette smoke reached me.
Without thinking, I wrinkled my nose.
"Were you smoking?"
He seemed caught off guard and instinctively took a small step back.
I was about to say something else before I noticed several security guards nearby.
Instead, I simply opened the door.
He quietly followed me inside.
An awkward silence settled between us.
Finally, I broke it.
"Have you eaten?"
Something flickered across his eyes before he slowly shook his head.
I let out a quiet sigh.
"I’ll warm your dinner."
"You don’t have to....."
"Come with me."
Without waiting for a response, I turned and walked toward the kitchen.
Once inside, I took the meal Maria had set aside for him and warmed it.
The entire time, Alexander sat silently by the counter, watching me.
After serving the food, I took a seat across from him.
He looked down at the generous portion before him.
"Am I supposed to finish all of this?"
"Maria prepared it for you," I replied. "Not me."
A tired smirk appeared on his face.
"So... you waited up for me."
I scratched my head awkwardly.
"I just couldn’t sleep..."
"So I thought I’d warm your dinner."
"You couldn’t sleep because of me?"
I narrowed my eyes, already regretting saying anything.
He was obviously enjoying teasing me.
"Eat your food."
"I’m going to bed."
Without waiting for another reply, I stood up and walked out of the kitchen, leaving him alone with his dinner.
I had actually been thinking about my phone call with Anna that morning.
The more I thought about it, the stronger the urge became to ask Alexander what was really happening and what he had discovered so far.
After all, I was Aimy’s mother.
I had been the one taking care of her for the past two years.
I deserved to know.
But when I realized he had only just returned home after what looked like another exhausting day, I pushed those thoughts aside and chose to warm his dinner instead.
After tossing restlessly in bed for what felt like forever, I finally sat up.
I couldn’t sleep.
Maybe...
It was better to talk to him now.
Knowing Alexander, I figured he’d probably be in his study.
I quietly made my way there.
When I reached the door, I hesitated before placing my hand on the doorknob.
Just then.....
"How could you even think of doing this, Aunt?"
Alexander’s furious voice echoed from inside.
I froze.
"Did I ask you to do any of this? I already told you I could never love anyone except Alicia, yet you refused to listen. You arranged for Karen to become my assistant just to set us up....."
My breath caught.
"How am I supposed to believe you had nothing to do with poisoning my daughter? Everyone knows how much you despise Alicia."
My hand flew to my mouth.
"Aunt, I don’t care what you say."
"But one thing is certain..."
"I will never forgive you for this."
"Two years ago, Alicia left after you insulted her..."
"And now..."
My trembling hand accidentally pressed the doorknob.
The door slowly creaked open.
Alexander immediately turned.
Our eyes met.
My hand still covered my mouth as tears streamed down my face.
"Alicia..."
