"Every time I try to believe you..."
"The memories come back."
"The way you looked at me with such coldness..."
"Then turned around and looked at another woman with the warmth I had always longed for." I added.
My voice broke.
"How can I be sure..."
"...that what you’re feeling now is really love..."
"...and not guilt..."
"...or something else?"
"There’s nothing to be afraid of anymore," he said softly.
"I can’t even imagine hurting you ever again."
"I know it won’t be easy for you to forget everything that happened."
"But if you can just give me one chance..."
"I’ll prove to you what I really feel ".
"We’ll create new memories together."
Then he gently took both of my hands in his and looked straight into my eyes.
"I love you, Alicia."
My breath caught.
Just for a moment.
I slowly shook my head.
"Can’t you see, Alexander?"
"Sometimes..."
"Love just isn’t enough."
"Your world is filled with dangers."
"And who knows what might happen to our daughter next?"
His grip around my hands tightened ever so slightly.
"But Aimy will always be my daughter."
"Wherever or how ever you try to hide her those dangers might still find their way to her".
"But if there’s ever a danger threatening either you or her..."
"I’d rather be there to protect both of you."
"No matter what happens, Alicia..."
"I don’t ever want you out of my sight."
"Because as long as you’re not beside me..."
"I’ll never stop being afraid."
He swallowed before continuing.
"But I don’t want you to stay because of Aimy."
"I don’t want you to feel trapped."
"I could never forgive myself if that happened."
His voice became quieter.
"I know I ruined the first years of our marriage."
"I regret everything."
"I regret what happened with Lilian."
"I regret every moment I made you suffer."
He took a shaky breath.
"Please..."
"Forgive me, Alicia."
"Please."
"We can’t keep living like this anymore."
"It’s killing me."
"I can’t even imagine living a life without you anymore."
As I looked into his eyes...
Watching every wall he’d spent years building crumble before me...
I suddenly understood something.
It wasn’t that I couldn’t see the love in his eyes.
Or the changes he’d made.
It was that...
I had never truly forgiven him.
Deep inside me, those memories were still alive.
Every time I tried to see the man standing before me...
The wounds from the past would reopen.
And the pain would blind me all over again.
But...
It was destroying me too.
Somewhere along the way, I had reached a point where I knew I could never stop loving Alexander.
No matter how much I tried.
No matter how much I convinced myself otherwise.
And perhaps...
That was exactly why I had clung so tightly to those old wounds.
They had become the shield protecting my heart from being broken all over again.
But...
For how much longer?
How much longer could I pretend this wasn’t slowly destroying me too?
If I continued like this...
The only thing I’d succeed in doing...
Was hurting myself.
And perhaps even the daughter I had been trying so desperately to protect.
So...
What was the point?
Still looking into his eyes, I slowly parted my lips and said the words I never thought I would be able to say.
"I forgive you."
