Chapter 136
“Emma, three hostiles approaching your six,” I said into the comm. “Don’t react. Let them get close. Vampires will handle it.”
“Copy.” Her voice was steady. “I trust you.”
Those three words. After everything we’d been through. After all the betrayals and rebuilding and impossible choices.
She trusted me.
I wasn’t going to let her down.
The three wolves emerged from the southern tree line, moving in human form but ready to shift. I could see Sarah in the lead her face set with determination that looked nothing like the friendly scout I’d known for years/
They were thirty yards from Emma. Twenty. Ten.
“Now,” Lord Castellan commanded.
The vampires moved.
One second the forest was empty. The next, twelve vampire warriors materialized from shadows and darkness, surrounding the three wolves completely.
Sarah shifted immediately, going for wolf form. Connor and Michael followed suit.
They didn’t make it.
The vampires were faster. Inhumanly fast. Within seconds, all three wolves were pinned, unable to shift, unable to fight, unable to do anything except struggle against supernatural strength.
“We have them,” the vampire lieutenant confirmed. “All three secured.”
I was already running. Lord Castellan kept pace beside me, both of us covering the distance to Emma’s position in seconds.
Emma hadn’t moved. Still stood at the tree line, Grace still sleeping in the bassinet. But when she turned to face me, I saw tears streaming down her face.
“Sarah,” she whispered. “It was Sarah this whole time.”
I pulled her close, careful of Grace between us. “I know. I’m sorry
“She was at our mating ceremony. She-” Emma’s voice broke. “She congratulated us when Grace was born. Brought us food. Smiled at our daughter while planning to-

“I know.” I held her tighter. “But it’s over now. We have her. It’s over.”
Lord Castellan approached the three captured wolves, his expression colder than I’d ever seen it.
“Sarah Mitchell,” he said quietly. “You have thirty seconds to explain why you betrayed your pack before I decide you’re not worth keeping alive.”
Sarah, pinned by two vampire warriors, laughed. Actually laughed.
“You think this is over?” Blood
trickled from her mouth where she’d bitten her own tongue trying to shift. “You

think catching me ends anything?”
Who are you working for?” I demanded. “Who sent the messages? Who’s been watching my family?”
“You’ll find out soon enough.” Her smile was terrible. Triumphant despite being captured. “This was never about the hunters. Never about Black River or Dr. Chen or any of the distractions we fed you. This was always/about Grace.”
Emma’s arms tightened around the bassinet. “Why? She’s a baby. What could you possibly want with-”
“She’s not just a baby.” Sarah’s eyes were wild now. Fanatic. “She’s the future Alpha heir. The bridge between wolves and vampires. The symbol of your precious alliance. And there are people-powerful people who don’t want that alliance to succeed.”
Lord Castellan’s expression didn’t change. “Names. Now.”
“I’ll never-”
He moved faster than my eyes could track. One moment standing five feet away. The next, his hand was around Sarah’s throat, lifting her off the ground despite the vampire warriors still holding her.
“Names,” he repeated. His voice was death itself. “Or I make your last moments so unpleasant that you’ll beg for execution.”
Sarah’s face was turning purple. But she smiled through the choking.
