“Lord Castellan is one vampire. One coven. That doesn’t prove anything about species-wide cooperation-”
“It proves it’s possible.” She moved closer. “Jeremy, Grace is going to grow up in whatever world we build for her. We can build a world where she’s taught that vampires are dangerous outsiders who can never be trusted. Where cooperation is weakness and isolation is strength. Where eight-hundred-year-old prejudices are just ‘traditional values’ that shouldn’t be questioned.”
“Or?”
“Or we build a world where she grows up seeing vampires and wolves working together as normal. Where Lord Castellan isn’t a scary debt-holder but Uncle Castellan who protected her when she was a baby. Where cooperation between species is just-cooperation. Not revolutionary, not controversial. Just normal.” 1
Grace made a small sound against Emma’s shoulder. Content. Safe. Completely unaware of the weight of what we were deciding.
“Uncle Castellan,” I repeated, a small smile breaking through despite everything. “You realize he’d probably have an existential crisis if we actually called him that.”
“Good. Ancient vampire lords could use more existential crises. Keeps them humble.” Emma’s expression softened. “Jeremy, I know you’re scared. I’m scared too. But we can’t let the Council make our choices for us. Can’t let fear of what might happen prevent us from building what should happen.”
I moved to the window, looking out at the pack lands. At wolves going about their morning routines-training, eating, living their lives. Most of them had no idea what had transpired in the dining room this morning. Had no idea that the future of supernatural cooperation might hinge on choices we were making right now.
“What if I’m wrong?” I asked quietly. “What if pushing this alliance, refusing the Council’s offer-what if it gets Grace hurt? Gets pack members killed? What if my stubbornness costs lives?”
“Then we’ll deal with those consequences together. Like we’ve dealt with everything else.” Emma came to stand beside me, Grace nestled between us. “But Jeremy, what if you’re right? What if Grace growing up in an integrated world-where species cooperation is normalized-what if that creates a better future? What if in fifty years, supernatural communities look back at this moment as when things started to change?”
“That’s a lot of pressure for a month-old baby.”
“She’s not carrying the pressure. We are.” Emma looked down at Grace. “She just gets to be a baby. Our job is to build a world where she can stay that way. Where being born to wolf parents who allied with vampires is just-a thing. Not a controversy. Not a target.”
I pulled them both close, careful of Grace between us. “When did you get so wise?”
“Therapy. Lots and lots of therapy.” She smiled against my shoulder. “Also, I’ve had a lot of practice making hard choices lately. Choosing to trust you again after the affair. Choosing to stay and fight when I could have run. Choosing to walk into that tree line with Grace knowing it was a trap. I’m getting better at making choices that terrify me.”
“How do you do it? How do you push through the fear?”
“I focus on what I’m protecting. Not what I’m afraid of.” She pulled back to look at me. “Jeremy, if we dissolve the alliance, if we raise Grace in isolation, if we teach her that cooperation with other species is dangerous-we’re not protecting her. We’re teaching her to be afraid. To be limited. To accept that eight-hundred-year-old prejudices are just how things are.”

“And if we maintain the alliance? Keep fighting for integration?”
“Then we’re teaching her to be brave. To question things that don’t make sense. To build bridges instead of walls. “Emma kissed Grace’s forehead. “I’d rather raise a brave daughter in a dangerous world than a fearful daughter in a ‘safe’ one. Especially since I don’t actually believe the Council’s version of safety is real.” 1
I thought about that. About the choice we were really making here.
Not just about alliances and politics and vampire cooperation. But about what kind of person we wanted Grace to become. What values we wanted to instill. What world we wanted her to inherit.
