Chapter 155
Mama laughed-the sound a little wet like she might cry. “When did you get so wise?”
“Uncle Cas says I take after him.” I grinned at him. “He says I’m stubborn and opinionated and those are good things.”
“I may have said that,” he admitted. “Though I’m regretting it now that it’s being used against me
“Grace.” Daddy pulled me into a hug. “You know Mama and I love you more than anything, right? And Uncle Cas loves you too. Everything we’re doing all of this-it’s to protect you. To make sure you can grow up in a world where families like ours are normal.”
“I know.” I hugged him back. “That’s why you have to send the letter. Because the Council needs to know that families like ours aren’t going away. Even if they’re scary and old and powerful *
“Out of the mouths of babes,” Uncle Cas murmured. He stood, moving back to the window. “Send it. Jeremy. Your daughter is right. The Council needs to know we’re not backing down.*
Mama and Daddy looked at each other one more time. Then Daddy moved to his computer and started
typing.
“Want to help me send it?” he asked me.
I climbed into his lap. Watched him pull up an email and attach the letter. The recipients were a bunch of names I didn’t recognize-Council members, probably. Important vampires and wolves who thought they could tell us what to do.
“Ready?” Daddy’s finger hovered over the send button.
I thought about Uncle Cas teaching me to read vampire history books. About him coming to every birthday party and school play. About the way he listened when I talked about my day like what i said actually mattered. About how he was family in every way that counted.
“Ready,” I said.
Daddy clicked send.

“Now we prepare,” Uncle Cas said from the window. “The Council will respond. Probably with force. We have allies gathering-other packs and covens who believe in integration like we do. But Grace, the next few weeks might be-complicated.”
“Complicated like how?”
“Like you might have to stay inside more. Like there will be lots of new people around-guards and warriors. Like Mama and Daddy might be very busy.” He turned to look at me. “But through all of it, I need you to remember something. Can you do that?”
“What?”
“That none of this is your fault. The Council’s anger isn’t because of anything you did wrong. It’s because they’re afraid of change. Afraid of losing control. You are perfect exactly as you are-a little girl who loves her family, including her vampire uncle. Don’t let them make you think that’s wrong.”
