Chapter 161
She was quiet for a moment, the resistance in her face warring with the reality of what I was saying
“How far is the safe house?”
“Three hours. Completely off Council intelligence. Elara and five other vampire warriors would go with you.”
“And you’d be here.” Her voice was soft. Complicated..
“Leading the defense. Trying to make sure there’s something left to come home to.” I touched her face. “Emma, after everything we’ve survived–the affair, the therapy, the wars, the hunters, the vampire deals I’m not losing you now. I’m not losing Grace. But I need to know you’re safe so I can function.”
“And if they breach the perimeter here? If they get through your defenses?”
“Then the safe house buys us time to regroup. To counterattack.” I rested my forehead against hers. “The worst thing that could happen isn’t losing the pack house. It’s losing you and Grace.”
She was silent for a long moment. The soup simmered on the stove. Outside I could hear worves and vampires coordinating positions.
“Okay,” she said finally. “We go to the safe house. But Jeremy-” She pulled back to look at me. “When this is over. When we’ve beaten the Council. We’re taking a vacation. Just us. No politics. No vampire debts. No ancient organizations.”
“Anywhere you want.”
“Somewhere with a beach and absolutely no supernatural drama.”
“Done.” I kissed her–soft, desperate, carrying everything I couldn’t say in the middle of war preparations. “I love you. Both of you. So much.”
“We love you too.” She kissed me back with the same desperation. “Come home, Jeremy. When this is done. Come home to us.” “I will. I promise.”
She went to pack. I returned to the war room, the fear settling into something I could manage. Something I could control. Emma and Grace would be safe. That freed me to do what needed to be done.
My father appeared beside me at the tactical display. “She agreed?”
“She agreed.”
“Good.” He looked at the maps. “Jeremy, I’ve been watching you prepare for this. Planning. Coordinating. Making impossible decisions.” He paused. “You know what I see?”
“Someone terrified of losing his family?”
“An Alpha.” His voice was quiet but firm. “A real one. Not someone who inherited a title or proved himself in a single battle. Someone who’s been tested by every possible challenge and is still standing. Still choosing his pack. Still choosing his family. Still choosing the right thing even when it costs everything.”
My throat tightened “Dad-”
“Let me finish. Because I might not-” He stopped. Started again. “In case I don’t get another chance. Jeremy, I’m proud of you. The man you’ve become. The Alpha you’re becoming. The father Grace deserves. The mate Emma needs.” He gripped my shoulder. “Whatever happens in the next twenty–four hours, I need you to know that.”
“Nothing’s going to happen to you-”
“You don’t know that. Neither do I.” He met my eyes. “But we fight anyway. Because Emma and Grace and everything we’ve
bull is worth it”
“Yes,” I said. “It is.”
