Grace’s hands were gentle as she cleaned the silver wound the pack doctor had bandaged. We were in the Trent family living room–me on the couch, Grace perched beside me with medical supplies, her parents and Lord Castellan in the kitchen having a quiet but intense conversation about what to do about Courtney’s attack.
“This is going to sting,” Grace warned, applying antiseptic to the edges of the wound.
“It’s fine. I’ve had worse.” I hadn’t, actually. Silver wounds were the worst kind. But I was trying to be stoic in front of my mate. “You really don’t have to be brave right now,” she said, reading me easily. “Connor, you took a knife meant for me. You’re allowed to admit it hurts.”
“It hurts,” I admitted. “A lot. Silver is-”
The front door slammed open.
Thomas Vex stood in the doorway, his face purple with rage, his whole body shaking. “WHERE IS SHE?”
I recognized him immediately–Courtney’s father, Council sympathizer, one of the wolves who’d spent years vocally opposing the Trent family’s integration model.
“Alpha Vex.” Alpha Jeremy appeared from the kitchen instantly, his voice controlled but his posture pure dominance. “You’re on my territory uninvited. I suggest you knock next time.”
attacked my daughter! Threatened her! Drove her off Trent property
“Knock? KNOCK?” Thomas’s voice rose. “Your family just atta in tears!”
“Your daughter attacked mine with a silver knife.” Alpha Jeremy’s voice was ice. “Attempted murder. On my territory. Against the Alpha heir and her mate.‘
“Lies! Courtney would never- she was defending herself against that vampire–loving freak-” He spotted Grace beside me and his expression twisted with disgust. “There she is. The manipulative little—”
A growl erupted from Alpha Jeremy that literally shook the house. Windows rattled. Furniture trembled. The sound was pure Alpha dominance, pure protective fury, the kind of growl that made every wolf instinct scream SUBMIT
I felt my own wolf immediately try to bare his throat. Grace went very still beside me. Even Lord Castellan, who wasn’t affected
r by wolf dominance, looked impressed by the sheer power in that sound.
“You will NOT speak about my daughter that way.” Alpha Jeremy’s voice was quiet now. Deadly quiet. “Thomas, your daughter committed attempted murder. Silver knife. Targeting Grace’s chest. Connor took the blade protecting his mate. There are witnesses. There is physical evidence. This is not up for debate.”
“My daughter was PROVOKED-
TE
“By what? By Connor recognizing his fated mate?” Luna Emma had appeared beside her mate, her own Alpha power radiating. Thomas, Courtney attacked because she couldn’t accept that Connor chose Grace. That’s not provocation. That’s jealousy turned violent.”
“Connor was manipulated by the mate bond–by this family’s twisted integration model-“Thomas was still yelling but backing up slightly from the combined force of both Alphas. “Courtney had a RELATIONSHIP with him. Six months of building
He gestured at Grace with contempt. “-used mystical destiny to steal him!” something real. And this this girl-
“I didn’t steal anyone,” Grace said quietly. Her voice was steady despite the fear I could smell rolling off her. “The Moon Goddess chose us as mates. Connor made his own decision about whether to accept that bond.”

Another growl from Alpha Jeremy. Louder this time. The kind that made my bores ache with the need to submit.
