Chapter 241
My Cheating Mate
Connor pov
I was sitting with Nate in the pack house living room, trying to distract him from the aftermath of the assault. He’d been processing a twelve-year-old who’d just experienced his first real violence, who’d hidden in a basement while his father fought extremists trying to kidnap his sister.
“So the dinosaurs would have definitely had better parliamentary procedures than horses,” Nate was explaining with complete seriousness. “Because they had bigger brains relative to body size in some species, and also T-Rex would have made an excellent Speaker of the House because no one would argue with those teeth.”
“That’s sound logic,” I agreed, only half-listening. The other half of my attention was on the pack house activity–wounded being treated, prisoners being processed, Alpha Jeremy coordinating with allied packs about the assault’s aftermath.
My mate bond with Grace was newly completed, and I could feel her through it now. Not thoughts exactly, but-emotions. General state. She’d been calm while in the basement, then determined as she left with Lord Castellan, and now-
Worried. Grace was worried about something.
The living room door opened. Grace and Lord Castellan entered, and one look at their faces confirmed what the bond had been telling me.
Something was very wrong.
“Nate,” Lord Castellan said gently. “Could you give us a moment? Adult conversation.”
“I’m twelve. I can handle adult conversations.” But he was already standing. “Fine. I’ll go see if the pack doctor needs help with the wounded. I’m very good at holding bandages.”
After he left, Grace came straight to me. I pulled her into my lap/automatically, needing her close, needing to feel her solid and safe against me.
“What did Courtney say?” I asked.
“Thomas Vex wasn’t the only Preservation Front leader.” Grace’s voice was tight. “There are two others. Marcus Dane and Elena Frost. They’re-they’re the real power. The true believers. And they’re still out there planning goddess knows what,”
My blood went cold. “The assault this morning wasn’t the end?”
“The immediate threat is over. But the organization-” She stopped. “Connor, it’s not over. Not really. We stopped one attack but there are still extremists out there who want integration destroyed.”
Lord Castellan was already moving toward Alpha leremy’s office. “Connor, stay with Grace. I need to brief Jeremy on what Courtney told us. This changes our security posture significantly.”
After he left, I held Grace tighter. “Teli me everything. What exactly did Courtney say?”.
She did. Told me about Marcus Dane handling operations, Elena Frost managing recruitment and ideology. About backup plans to target Nate, or Lord Castellan directly, or allied packs. About how Thomas Vex had been the public face while the real extremism ran deeper.
“Courtney’s father used her,” Grace said quietly. “Let her think she was giving us complete intelligence while actually protecting the real leadership. She didn’t know about Marcus and Elena until yesterday, and by then the assault was already happening.”
“Do you believe her?”
“Uncle Cas does. Says she’s telling the truth.” Grace paused. “Connor, she seemed-broken. Her father died in the assault, Died

trying to kidnap me. And she’d given us the intelligence that helped kill him. She’s-she’s grieving and guilty and trying to make it right by telling us about Marcus and Elena.”
I processed that. Courtney who’d attacked Grace, who’d helped extremists-was how helping us again. Had lost her father because of choices he’d made and intelligence she’d provided.
I should have felt something about that. Sympathy maybe. Or vindication. But mostly I just felt-tired. Tired of Courtney being part of our story. Tired of extremism. Tired of threats against my mate.
“What’s the plan?” I asked.
“Uncle Cas is going to hunt them. Marcus and Elena. Use the intelligence Courtney provided to track them down and-” She stopped. “And eliminate the threat. Permanently.”
“Good.”
“Connor-”

“Grace, I know that sounds harsh. But these people tried to kidnap you this morning. Are planning to escalate if that didn’t work. Want to destroy your family’s integration model by any means necessary.” I looked at her seriously. “I’m not going to feel bad about Uncle Cas stopping them. However he needs to stop them.”
