Alpha Jeremy held his gaze fora long moment. Then nodded. “Understood. They’re yours.”

Lord Castellan turned to Grace and me. “Connor, I need you to understand something. The immediate threat to Grace is over. The assault failed. Thomas is dead. You’re safe to be newly mated, to build your relationship, to have the future you fought for.”

“But-“I could hear the ‘but’ coming.

“But Marcus and Elena are still out there. Still planning. Grace will need to maintain some security measures until I’ve confirmed they’re eliminated. Not maximum protocols-she can return to school, to her studio, to normal life. But guards. Awareness. Caution.” He paused. “Connor, can you live with that? With Grace being safe but not entirely free of threat?”

I looked at my mate. At Grace who’d survived a knife attack and a terrorist assault and Courtney’s betrayal and was still here, still strong, still herself.

“I can live with that if Grace can,’ I said.

“I can live with guards and caution if it means actually living,” Grace said. “Uncle Cas, I don’t want to hide in the basement forever. Don’t want to give Marcus and Elena the power to make me small. So yes-I’ll be careful. I’ll accept security measures. But I’m also going to go to school and paint and be with Connor and live my life.”

“That’s my girl.” Alpha Jeremy’s voice was full of pride. “Grace, you’re braver than any extremist. Stronger than their ideology. They wanted you scared. Instead you’re planning to keep living. That’s-that’s how we win.”

“We’ve already won the immediate battle,” Lord Castellan said. “Thomas Vex is dead. The assault failed. Grace is safe. Now we just-finish the job. Hunt down the remnants. End the Preservation Front permanently.”

“How confident are you that you can find them?” I asked.

“Very confident. Eventually.” Lord Castellan’s smile was predatory. “Connor, I’ve been hunting threats for eleven centuries. Marcus Dane and Elena Frost are smart, but they’re not the smartest enemies I’ve faced. They’re careful, but they’ve also just lost their political face and a significant portion of their forces. They’ll make mistakes. And when they do-I’ll be there.”

Nate reappeared in the doorway. “Are you guys done with the adult conversation? Because the pack doctor says I’m actually pretty good at holding bandages and can I train to be a medic?”.

The tension broke. Alpha Jeremy laughed-real, surprised laughter. “Nate, you want to be a pack medic?”

“Someone has to help with the wounded. And honestly, Daddy, your pack ghts a lot. Seems like a useful skill.” He was completely serious. “Also, blood doesn’t bother me and I’m very good at following instructions under pressure.”

“You’re twelve.”

“Almost thirteen. And Grace was doing advanced art by twelve. I can do advanced medical” He paused. “Is this because of the dinosaur parliament thing? Because I’m still right about T-Rex making an excellent Speaker.”

I pulled Grace closer, listening to her family banter about Nate’s sudden medical career aspirations. This this was what we’d fought for. What extremists had tried to destroy.
