Chapter 266

“Then let me be scared for you. Let me handle the security planning and threat assessment.” His voice was gentle. “Grace, you focus on being excited. On preparing to be a mother. On painting and living and building your family. I’ll handle making sure

that family stays safe.”

“We’ll all handle it,” Alpha Jeremy said firmly. This baby-our grandchild-is going to be the most protected child in North America. Between pack security and vampire guards and Uncle Cas being Uncle Cas, no extremist is getting anywhere near them.

.”

“What about normal childhood?” Grace asked. “I don’t want our baby growing up with constant guards and threat assessments. I want them to-to play and explore and be a kid.”

“They will be,” Luna Emma said. “Grace, you grew up with protection protocols. You also grew up painting in the garden and asking Uncle Cas about Impressionism and having a completely normal childhood within a protected environment. Your baby

will too.”

“Your mother’s right,” my father said. “Connor grew up in this pack. Normal pack childhood despite knowing there were threats. Kids adapt. They don’t know any different.”

“And this baby will grow up thinking vampire great-uncles are completely normal,” Lord Castellan added. “Which is—which is exactly what we’ve been fighting for. The next generation who doesn’t understand why species separation ever existed.”

“Elena Frost’s worst nightmare,” I said. “Our baby represents everything she tried to destroy.”

“Then let’s make sure our baby thrives despite what Elena wanted.” Alpha Jeremy raised his glass. “To Grace and Connor. To our future grandchild. To the next generation of integration. To family.”

“To family,” everyone echoed.

We toasted. Celebrated. Began planning-nursery discussions, naming debates, Nate’s detailed curriculum for teaching babies about dinosaur governance.

But underneath the celebration, I felt the weight of what we’d just announced. We were bringing a child into this world. Into a family that extremists had targeted for years. Into a future that wasn’t guaranteed to be safe.

After dinner, while everyone was still talking, I found Lord Castellan in the kitchen.

“Connor.” He was making tea–the one human beverage he could consume. “Congratulations. Genuinely. You and Grace are going to be wonderful parents.”

“Thank you, But Uncle Cas—” I paused. “I need to ask. Honestly. Are we safe? Is Grace safe while pregnant? is our baby going to

-“I couldn’t finish.

He set down the tea. Looked at me with eleven hundred years of experience in those ancient eyes. “Connor, I can’t promise. absolute safety. Elena Frost’s ideology exists beyond her imprisonment. There will always be wolves who oppose integration. But—” He paused. “But your baby is going to grow up in the safest integrated community that exists. With protection I’ve spent eighteen years building. With a coalition of allies who’ve proven they’ll fight for this family. With parents who are brave enough to build a future despite extremist threats.”

“That’s not a guarantee of safety.”

“No. It’s a promise of protection. Of love. Of doing everything possible to make sure your child grows up safe and happy and completely normal despite what Elena wants.” He smiled slightly. “Connor, I’ve been Grace’s uncle since she was born. I’m going to be your child’s great-uncle. That’s–that’s not a title I take lightly. This baby is going to be as protected as I can possibly make them.”

“Even against ideology that Elena says is immortal?”

“Especially against that.” His expression hardened. “Connor, Elena Frost sits in a Council prison believing her idealogy will

outlast the Preservation Front. She’s wrong. What’s actually immortal is family. Love. The determination to build something better. Your baby represents that. The future Elena couldn’t destroy.”

“I hope you’re right.”

“I’ve been doing this for eleven hundred years. I’m right.” He picked up his tea. “Now go back to Grace. She needs you celebrating with her, not worrying in the kitchen with her overprotective uncle.”

“Great-uncle,” I corrected.

“Great-uncle,” he agreed, smiling. “Goddess, I’m going to be a great-uncle. That’s-that’s quite something.”

I returned to the dining room where Grace was explaining to Nate that no, he couldn’t start teaching the baby about dinosaurs while it was still in utero, actual educational curriculum had to wait until after birth.

She saw me and smiled. Radiant despite the fear I knew she was carrying. Beautiful and brave and absolutely the right person to build this future with.

We were having a baby. In a world where Elena’s ideology still existed. Where extremists would always oppose what we’d built.

But we were also having a baby in a world where Lord Castellan was great-uncle. Where both sets of grandparents were already planning nurseries. Where Nate was developing age-appropriate dinosaur curricula. Where family meant love transcending species boundaries.

That was the world our baby would inherit. Not perfect. Not guaranteed safe. But filled with love and protection and the determination to prove extremists wrong.

We’d figure it out. Together. All of us.

We had to.

Because our baby-the next generation-deserved the future we’d been fighting for.

And we were going to give it to them.

No matter what Elena Frost’s immortal ideology tried to do.

Love was more immortal. Family was more immortal.

Always had been. Always would be.

Together. All of us. Plus one more soon.

Building the future Elena couldn’t destroy.
