Chapter 91

My Cheating Mate

Jeremy pov

I was pacing the war room at 2 AM, staring at troop deployments that still didn’t quite work, when the idea hit me like lightning.

Vampires.

We had vampire allies. Not close alliesmore like an uneasy treaty signed thirty years ago after a territorial dispute was resolved peacefully. But allies nonetheless.

The Nightshade Coven. Led by Lord Castellan, one of the oldest vampires in North America. They controlled territory bordering Durs to the east, maintained a careful neutrality with most supernatural factions.

And they owed us a debt.

Five years ago, when rogue vampires had caused problems in their territory, my father had allowed them to cross our lands in pursuit. Had even provided intelligence on the roguesmovements. It had been a gesture of goodwill, cementing the treaty.

Vampires never forgot debts. It was part of their code, their honor system.

Dad,I said, my voice cutting through the tactical discussion. I have an idea. You’re not going to like it.

My father looked up from the maps, exhaustion evident in the lines around his eyes. At this point, I’ll take any idea. What are you thinking?

The Nightshade Coven. We could ask for their assistance.

The room went silent. Several wolves actually took a step back.

Vampires?Elder Morrison’s voice was incredulous. You want to bring vampires into a pack conflict?

Not just any vampires. Lord Castellan’s coven. They owe us a debt from five years ago.I moved to the map, pointing to our eastern border. If they agreed to help, they could provide a significant tactical advantage. Vampires are fast, strong, harder to kill than wolves. Even a dozen vampire warriors would shift the numerical balance.

Jeremy-My father’s voice was careful. Asking vampires for help with an internal pack matterthat’s unprecedented. It could set a dangerous precedent.

This isn’t internal anymore. Black River consolidated three mercenary factions plus independents. They’re operating in neutral territory, planning an assault that will kill dozens of our wolves.I met his eyes. Dad, I’m not talking about inviting them to pack meetings. I’m talking about a onetime tactical alliance against a common threat

What common threat?Marcus asked. Black River is targeting us, not vampires.

Black River is a mercenary organization that will work for anyone with money. Today they’re targeting us. Tomorrow, they could be hired to attack vampire territory.I was warming to the argument now. Lord Castellan would understand that. Would see the strategic value in helping us eliminate a potential future threat.

Or he could see it as an opportunity to gain leverage over us,another wolf argued. Vampires don’t do anything out of kindness. They’d want something in return.

They already have something we wantcombat support. We’d be trading debt repayment for tactical assistance. It’s a fair exchange.

My father rubbed his face, clearly torn. Son, I understand the tactical logic. But bringing vampires into a wolf conflictthe political ramifications could be significant. Other packs might see it as weakness, as us being unable to handle our own problems.

Uther parks might see it as strategic brilliance,I countered. Using every available resource to protect our territory and people. Dad, we’re outnumbered by forty percent. We need every advantage we can get.

Vampires can’t fight in daylight,Elder Morrison pointed out. That limits their tactical utility.

We’re striking at midnight. Vampires would be at full strength.I pulled up the attack timetime. If they agreed to hit from the east while we strike from the west and south, we’d have a threepronged assault Black River would be surrounded.
