Chapter 179 Security Guards Walk Us Out

“He is a good person,” I told the principal. My voice held iron. “He have more honor than the rest of this student body combined. The

contract was a mistake, but the loyalty is real.”

Miller offered no response. He pointed toward the heavy wooden door.

Ryder picked up my canvas backpack from the floor. He slung the heavy strap over his shoulder. He grabbed my hand. We turned our backs on the principal and walked out of the sterile office.

We stepped into the reception area.

Mrs. Gable kept her eyes fixed on her computer monitor. Two large men wearing dark blue security uniforms stood near the exit. They held walkie-talkies clipped to their belts. Their expressions lacked empathy. They viewed us as a threat to the campus environment.

“Follow us, please, the taller guard instructed.

He pushed the glass door open. He stepped into the main corridor. The second guard fell into step behind us, boxing us in.

We walked back into the chaotic noise of the A-wing.

The news of the suspension spread through the school with terrifying speed. The affluent elite lined the massive hallway. They abandoned their classrooms to witness the public execution. Hundreds of navy blue and white uniforms pressed against the metal lockers.

The whispers returned, louder and more vicious than before.

“They took her ID card,” a girl with a blonde ponytail announced. She pointed a manicured finger at my empty blazer pocket.

“The charity case is gone,” Trent Lawson sneered. He stood near the science lab doors. He held his phone high, recording the walk of shame. “Back to the East Side, Petrova. Enjoy the grease traps.”

Harper Vance laughed. The sharp, cruel sound echoed down the linoleum floor. “Maybe Steinmann will hire her to clean his pool.”

The insults rained down from every direction. The wealthy teenagers reveled in my destruction. They hated my perfect grades. They hated my quiet confidence. They celebrated the fall of the scholarship student who dared to claim the top rank.

Ryder tightened his grip on my hand. He shifted his massive frame closer to my side. He used his body as a physical shield against the hostile crowd. He glared at Trent Lawson. He stared down Harper Vance. He forced the affluent elite to step back against the lockers.

“Keep your eyes on the exit, Ryder murmured. His warm breath brushed my ear. “Do not let them see you break.”

I followed his command. I fixed my gaze on the heavy double doors at the end of the long corridor. I blocked out the cruel jokes. I ignored the glowing phone screens recording our exit. I focused on the steady rhythm of Ryder’s footsteps and the firm, protective pressure of his

hand.

We passed the biology classroom. I thought about the ruined midterm sitting on Mr. Harrison’s desk. I thought about the complex chemical equations I intentionally botched to protect the boy walking beside me.

We passed the library doors. I thought about the round wooden table in the back corner. I thought about the chewed yellow pencil and the blue ink star eraser. I thought about the four years of quiet, unspoken devotion hidden in the shadows.

The sacrifice meant everything. I traded my crown for his freedom. Chloe accelerated the timeline and burned the bridge, but my choice

remained solid. I chose Ryder. I chose the boy over the prestige.

We reached the end of the main corridor.

The taller security guard pushed the heavy metal bar on the front doors. The glass swung outward. The cold spring rain greeted us, washing away the sterile scent of the Crestview hallways.

We stepped onto the concrete stairs. The second guard followed us out. He reached for the heavy brass handles.

I turned my head for one final look.
