Chapter 191 We Must Use Our Minds
“I chose to protect you, I continued. My voice held iron. “Chloe laid a trap. She weaponized my devotion. She used my love for you as
leverage. That makes her a coward. It does not make you a burden.
“She won, Raisa.” He reached up and wrapped his hands over my wrists. His grip felt tight and desperate. “She secured the top rank. She
pushed us out the front doors. We hold zero leverage.”
“We hold the truth.”
“The school board does not care about the truth.” He let go of my wrists. He stepped back, pulling out of my grasp. The furious energy returned to his posture. He resumed his pacing. “The board cares about reputation. They care about money. My father controls the board. Chloe’s mother sits on the parent committee. They rigged the game.”
He walked to the window. He stared out through the plastic blinds at the dark, rain-soaked street.
“I will not let her keep the victory,” Ryder vowed. He pressed his hand against the glass pane. “If I cannot force a confession from her, 1 will use different methods. I know her secrets. I know her family’s financial status.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The Vance family projects massive wealth, but they carry massive debt,” Ryder explained. His tone turned cold and calculating. “They leverage their properties to maintain their social standing. I overheard my father discussing their failing investments months ago. I will leak their financial ruin to the senior group chat. I will turn the elite against her.”
“You surrendered your trust fund yesterday,” I reminded him. “You possess no access to those corporate files.”
“I possess connections.” He turned away from the window. “I will break into my father’s home office. I will steal the documents. I will burn her social standing to the ground. I will make her a pariah.
I watched him plan the destruction. I watched the Crestview delinquent prepare for war.
He wanted to fight fire with fire. He wanted to use blackmail, theft, and intimidation to correct a massive injustice. He wanted to play the exact same toxic game the affluent elite played every single day.
I realized the fatal flaw in his strategy.
If Ryder hacked into files, leaked financial secrets, or threatened Chloe with physical intimidation, he validated the school board’s narrative. Principal Miller called him a dangerous influence. The administration claimed he forced me into the contract. If he went on a rampage, he proved them right. He became the villain they needed to justify my suspension.
We could not beat the affluent elite by adopting their cruel methods.
I looked down at the floorboards. I looked at the scattered white index cards. I looked at the blue ink pen resting near the leg of the desk.

I spent four years fighting their assumptions with complex equations and flawless essays. I used my intellect as a shield. I possessed a brilliant, analytical mind. I did not need to break into a house. I did not need to leak financial ruin.
I needed to read the rules.
“Stop,” I said.
Ryder paused mid-stride. He looked at me, confused by the sudden shift in my tone.
“My plan works,” he insisted. “I break her credibility. I force the board to reconsider the source of the leak.”
“Your plan gets you expelled permanently.” I countered. I walked toward the desk. I bent down and picked up the ruined biology practice test. I held the stapled packet in my hands. “Your plan gives the administration the exact excuse they need to label you a criminal. It proves you are the monster they think you are.”
I do not care what they call me.
“I care!” I threw the packet onto the desk. The paper slapped the wood with a sharp crack. I care what they call you. I care about your future. If you go on a rampage, they win. They want us to act like desperate, angry children from the wrong side of the city limits. I refuse to give them the satisfaction
Ryder crossed his arms over his chest. Then how do we fight her? She holds the board.”
“We fight her in the light, I stated. I walked toward him. I did not stop until I stood directly in his path, forcing him to hold his ground. We do not hide in the dark. We do not use blackmail. We do not stoop to her level.”
Raisa, the suspension notice sits on your kitchen table right now. They already passed judgment.”
They issued a preliminary suspension. The formal disciplinary hearing remains pending.” I looked deep into his hazel eyes. The fierce determination in my chest burned away the lingering despair. “Chloe manipulated the timeline, but she cannot change the facts. She cheated her way to the top rank. She lacks my raw intellect. She lacks my work ethic.”
She possesses a flawless transcript on paper.”
Paper burns, I said.
I reached out and placed my hands on his chest. I felt the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath my palms. He carried the weight
of the world for me He offered to bleed for my honor. I needed to show him a better way to win the war.
No more fighting in parking lots, I told him. My voice held a calm, unshakable resolve. “No more playing the villain. No more breaking
