Chapter 223 Hugo Reads The Old Rulebook
Chairman Davis slammed his hands onto the mahogany table. The loud smack echoed in the tense boardroom. He glared at Principal
Miller.

“News vans?” Davis asked. His voice dropped to a lethal register. “You told the committee you possessed this situation under control. You
claimed the Petrova girl held zero influence.”
“She holds no influence, Miller stammered. He pointed a shaking finger at Ryder. “The Steinmann boy caused this disruption. He
coordinated a media stunt.”
Ryder stood tall. He kept his arms crossed over his broad chest. He wore a dark, satisfied expression.
“My arrest made the morning broadcast, Ryder stated. “The local stations monitor my movements. I possess a tracker on my phone. A friend in the city press corps noted my location. I decided to invite them to a board meeting.”
I looked at Ryder. He used his public shame as a weapon. He turned the billionaire heir narrative into a massive spotlight for the scholarship kids. He leveraged his own humiliation to protect my community.
“Clear the courtyard,” Davis ordered the security guard. “Use force if necessary. Drag them back to their classrooms. I refuse to let the press film a riot on Crestview grounds.”
“It is not a riot,” I said. I stood up from the wooden chair. ‘It is a sit-in.”
I turned away from the panicked board members. I walked out of the heavy oak doors. Ryder followed me. We navigated the long, polished corridor and pushed the glass entrance doors open.
The cold morning air hit my face. The gray sky hung low over the brick buildings.
I stopped at the top of the stone steps.
The sight stole the breath from my lungs.
Over three hundred students sat on the damp pavement. They filled the main plaza. They blocked the stone pathways to the science wing and the humanities building. They wore their crisp white uniform shirts and dark blazers. The silence radiating from the massive crowd
felt like a physical weight.
I looked at the front row.
Hugo sat on the cold stone. He wore his faded winter coat. His hands gripped a battered copy of the Crestview student rulebook. Sofia sat beside him. She held a large piece of white poster board.
I walked down the steps. Ryder stayed at my side.

The students sitting on the outer edge saw me approach. They shifted their weight. They parted, creating a narrow path through the
center of the crowd
I walked through the sea of uniforms. I saw the faces of my classmates. I saw the exhausted kids from the scholarship corridor I saw
wealthy students from the debate team. I saw teenagers who spent four years watching Trent Lawson rule the hallways with unearned
cruelty They tired of the elite game. They chose to fight back.
I reached the front row. I stopped in front of Hugo and Sofia.
“You came back.” I whispered. My throat tightened. The tears burned my eyes.
Hugo looked up. He did not look terrified. He looked resolved.

Trent Lawson threatened my math grant on Tuesday, Hugo said. His voice carried across the silent plaza. I surrendered the petition. I let him win because I feared the administration. But I watched the morning news. I watched the police arrest Ryder for defending himself.
The elite will crush us one by one. We cannot survive in the shadows anymore.”
We read the rulebook. Sofia added. She adjusted her grip on the poster board. Appendix G guarantees a fair hearing. They cannot expel the entire junior class, Raisa They lack the space We hold the line.”
I dropped to my knees. I sat on the damp stone beside Hugo. Ryder sat on my other side.
We joined the line
The heavy glass doors of the administration building flew open.
Principal Miller marched out. He held a red plastic megaphone in his right hand. Four campus security guards flanked him. Chairman Davis stood at the top of the steps, watching the scene with a dark scowl
Miller stopped halfway down the steps. He raised the megaphone to his mouth. A sharp burst of static pierced the quiet morning.
“This is an unauthorized assembly, Miller announced His amplified voice echoed off the brick walls. “You violate the core tenets of the Crestview code of conduct. I order you to disperse. Return to your morning lectures. Anyone remaining in this courtyard in two minutes
will face immediate disciplinary action.”
No one moved. No one spoke. The silence held firm.
Miller lowered the megaphone. A vein pulsed in his forehead. The power dynamic shifted, and he hated the loss of control. He needed to
break the united front. He needed a target.
He focused his glare on the front row. He focused on the B-wing.
“Hugo Martinez, Miller barked into the megaphone. You rely on the alumni foundation to pay your tuition. You jeopardize your entire future for a suspended student. Stand up and return to your calculus class. If you refuse, I will terminate your funding by noon.”

The threat hung in the cold air. It was the exact threat Trent Lawson used in the dark stairwell. It was the favored weapon of the affluent
