“I think I’m in love.” Humphrey said to me, his eyes glazed over as he stared into space.
“With Helen?’ I asked as I took a sip of my whiskey.
“Yes, and it’s not just because she is my mate.”
“Then why?”
“Simple…she is perfect. I am going to make her my luna.”

I stared at the wolf that had become my best friend over the years after I had saved his life years ago, and he had saved mine, and smiled.
I nodded, feeling weird. Yes, Helen was amazing, but they had known each other for a total of two weeks. That was hardly enough time to know anyone. It didn’t help that she didn’t even remember who she was.
She could be anyone.
“You don’t think it’s a good idea.” He suddenly said.
“What? I didn’t say that.”
“You don’t have to.” He said, dropping his empty glass on the table. “I can read you like a book.”
I sighed. “I just think you should be careful, that’s all.”
“I am investigating her, you know… I’m looking for family. Just to be safe.”
I didn’t know that. I guess Humphrey wasn’t totally lost in love.
“Good. I am glad you are taking that initiative.”
I said.
“Thanks, friend.” He slapped me affectionately on my shoulders.

“I also want to ask you for something important.”
“Go ahead,” I said, looking over at him.
The afternoon breeze was blowing heavily as we both sat on the bonnet of his car.
“Soon, my father will be stepping down as alpha due to his illness, and I have to choose a beta.”
“If you are asking, the answer is no. I cannot.”
“Why not?” He looked offended.
“You know why. I still have my mission. I have to take back my ancestor’s pack.”
Humphrey nodded.
“But you are not ready.”
“No, but soon I will be, and I don’t want to leave you stranded.”
Humphrey laughed, shaking his head. “You fool! You realize once I become Alpha, then it’s easier for me to give you my army if you are
my beta.”
I glanced at him.
“Why would you do that?”
“Because I love you, stupid. Is it not obvious? We’ve known each other for a year, but I genuinely think you are the brother I never had.”
He always said this, and it always made me smile, because even though I couldn’t quite express my own feelings, I felt the same way.
“Same.” I murmured, and he rolled his eyes.
He had always found my show of emotions a little annoying and always teased me about it.
“Emotionless wall.”
“So, when are you asking her out?” I asked.
“I have, and you are helping me decorate.”
He said, pulling me down from his car and leading me to God knows where.

Chapter 227
As I followed him, I could not help but feel cornered. I was not into any of this romantic nonsense.
The sun was beginning to dip, streaking the sky in shades of amber and violet as Humphrey dragged me toward the pack house ballroom. I wasn’t surprised-it was exactly the kind of place he’d choose for something sentimental like this. Candles, flowers, music, all that crap.
“Humphrey, this is ridiculous,” I muttered as he shoved a box of red roses into my arms.
He grinned like a fool. “Nonsense. Women love gestures, Gerald. The bigger, the better.”
“Or maybe she’ll think you’re trying too hard,” I said dryly.
“Ah, shut up and put those on the table.”
I did as he asked, even though I grumbled under my breath. He was humming to himself as he arranged plates and silverware, checking the clock every two minutes like a nervous pup. I had seen him in battle, fearless and fierce, but now he was trembling over a dinner date. It was both hilarious and… strangely endearing.
“Are you sure about this?” I asked again, leaning against the wall. “You barely know her.”
He straightened and looked at me with that same stubborn spark I’d seen a thousand times. “I know enough. And besides, I don’t need a lifetime to recognize what’s mine.”
There was no arguing with that tone. I just sighed. “Fine. I’ll go get her.”
“Thank you, brother,” he said with a grin.
I left before I could change my mind.
I found her in the middle of the packhouse garden.
She was massaging her head as she always did.
Her way of trying to remember her past.
“Remember anything yet?” I asked.
She was startled.
“Um, no.” She said when she realized it was just me. She was really stunning under the sun. I understood why he was so obsessed.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, a smile on her face. Something about it seemed forced today.
“Oh, your boyfriend wanted me to come get you.”
