Chapter 233
I froze. She’d said it so carelessly, so confidently, that the words had almost carried the implication of a threat. But they were. Every one
of them was full of poison.
“So you confess, I snarled through my teeth.
Cassandra laughed, a slow, mocking laugh that crept down my spine. ‘Admit it? No, sweet girl. I’m simply informing you that you should know your place. Gerald doesn’t require another headache. He has enough to deal with being Alpha. If you were intelligent, you’d be gone
before you get him killed.”
I took a step closer until inches separated us. “You think you can frighten me?”
“I don’t have to,” she gasped. “You’ll do it to yourself. It’s what you’re best at-ruining people’s lives without even knowing it.”
Her words stung me. I didn’t want to let her see it, but she saw the glint in my eyes and smiled triumphantly.
“I warned you,” I snarled. “Leave him alone.”
“Oh, Liliana,” she whispered, stepping closer, “just because we are not mates doesn’t mean I can’t stake a claim on him. You don’t know what a man like Gerald wants. You think that love is enough? It isn’t. Loyalty, guilt, and comfort-those are what bind him, and I exactly know how to play on them.”
I could sense my wolf within me, boiling, eager to surface. But I pushed it down. She was not worth losing control over. Not now.
“Perhaps, I spoke slowly, “but the distinction between us is that you’ll always have to wheedle him to stay. I don’t.”
Her eyes went black, but before she could utter any words, a sound echoed through the hallway: footsteps, heavy and urgent.
We both shifted as Max arrived, slightly winded. “Liliana, what are you doing here? Gerald made it clear. You stay in your room.
I didn’t respond to him. “What is happening?”
“We apprehended one of Glen’s men. Alive.” He was curt. “Gerald wants him questioned before dawn.”
I glanced over at Cassandra. She stood there with that same smug peacefulness, arms crossed like she’d already won the contest that I hadn’t realized was happening.
“Fine,” I said to Max, shouldering past her.
“We’re going.”
We walked, and I could sense Cassandra’s gaze burning holes into my shoulder blades.

Chapter 233
“Watch out out there,” she said softly. “It would be such a tragedy if history repeated itself.”
I didn’t turn back.
The interrogation room was cold, dimly lit, and smelled faintly of blood. The half-dead man was strapped to the chair, face bloated, lip
split. Gerald was several feet away, arms crossed, face expressionless.
He glanced at me when I walked in, his eyes darting briefly to my arm. “You shouldn’t be here.”
“I’m not leaving,” I replied.
He made no argument. He simply turned his focus to the man. “Talk.”
The rogue spat blood onto the floor. “You think I’m scared of you?”
Gerald’s tone dropped into a dangerous calm. “You should be.”
Max slipped into his hand a thin silver blade, and for a moment I could picture Gerald actually using it, but he didn’t. Gerald moved in, his tone softer, deadlier. “You know who I am. You know what you’ll do if you lie. So start. Who hired you to abduct Liliana?”
The rogue’s breathing was accelerating. “I-I don’t know her name.”
Gerald slammed his hand against the wall, the sound echoing like thunder. “Try again.”
“She was rich!” he cried. “Human-looking, but powerful. Paid us half up front. Said the girl had to disappear. Said she’d take care of the
rest herself.”
Gerald’s jaw tightened. “A woman?”
The man nodded quickly. “Yeah. Wore a gold bracelet. The kind with an emerald stone. Fancy, old.”
My heart stilled. I’d seen that bracelet before, on Cassandra’s wrist.
Gerald turned to me, slowly, our eyes meeting. He watched the realization spread across my face, and his expression hardened.
