Chapter 6
Chapter 6
The next few days I kept myself busy as hell.
About to leave the country-had to do goodbye dinners with friends and coworkers.
Just got off work, about to head to another dinner, when Cade called:
“Hey, grab some stuff from my place-like my toothbrush, some clothes, whatever. Bring it to the hospital. I’m not leaving Harper.”
I froze for a long minute.
Hadn’t heard from him in days. Literally forgot Cade existed.
Guess he’d been with Harper the whole time and never went home once.
If he’d gone back to our place even one time, he would’ve noticed all my shit was gone.
When I stayed silent, Cade’s voice turned sharp. “Vera, are you done throwing your little tantrum yet?”
“Don’t forget-YOU hurt Harper. I’m only staying because of you. I’m fixing YOUR mess!”
I laughed-cold and bitter.
“Cade, you’ve told yourself that lie so many times, you actually believe it now, don’t you?”
Forget Harper’s shitty self-directed blame-game performance.
Let’s say she really did get hurt.
Does she not have other friends? Other girls who could help her out?
Hiring a nurse isn’t exactly hard either, right?
Why does my fiancé need to be the one taking care of her 24/7?
Stop acting all righteous while doing shady shit!
But Cade didn’t see it that way.
“ENOUGH! Vera, when did you turn into such a bitch?!”
“You hurt Harper and you don’t even feel bad about it!”
He yelled at me, furious.
“Don’t come home for a while. Think about what you did. When you finally realize you were wrong, THEN we can talk about rescheduling the wedding!”
“No, Cade. There’s not gonna be a wedding.”
“Vera, what are you-”
“We’re breaking up.”

Chapter 6
I cut him off, my voice cold and steady.
“I already moved out a few days ago. Took all my stuff.”
“I told my parents. Yours? That’s on you.”
When I decided to leave, I’d never been more clear-headed.
While packing, I told my parents the whole plan.
When they found out I was calling off the engagement, their first reaction was heartbreak.
“Sweetheart… what did he put you through to get to this point…”
They saw how much I cared about Cade.
And when I told them about joining the research team, they supported me completely.
So, Cade-from now on, we’re done.
But clearly Cade didn’t believe me.
“Oh I get it. Seen this on TV before. Playing hard to get.”
He laughed bitterly, voice thick with sarcasm.
“Vera, we’ve been together almost five years. You’re really pulling this move? What, you waiting for me to come crawling back? How old are you? This is pathetic!”
So Cade remembered-we’d been together five years.
Five whole years. You’d get attached to a dog in that time.
So why did he keep hurting me over and over without giving a shit?
“Let’s be clear-we never got married. I don’t need your permission.”
I smiled coldly.
“And at our engagement party? Harper decided she wanted to travel, so you ditched everyone and left with her. We never finished.”
We were never actually engaged.
Cade, you and I? We stopped mattering to each other a long time ago.
“I KNEW IT! You’re still jealous!”
Cade yelled.
“I already TOLD you! Harper gets lost easily! I had to go with her!”
“I’ve always seen her AS a little sister. Vera, what’s wrong with you?!”
“Just apologize RIGHT NOW and I’ll forgive you. Or you’re gonna regret this!”
For the first time, I felt something I could only describe as laughable.

Chapter 6
People in love always see their partner through rose-colored glasses.
Past me must’ve been blind as hell.
Cade without the filter of love? Not worth a single second of my time.
I didn’t bother arguing.
Just hung up. And blocked him on everything.
