Beatty lifted an eyebrow. “That’s pretty generous of you, Mr. Lane.”

Andrew glanced down at his phone again, checked the screen for a moment, then looked back up at her.

“You earned it,” he said. “Take your time. You don’t need to answer me right away.”

She lowered her head, her voice teasing. “Honestly, I thought you’d just offer me a wad of cash or something.”

She meant it as a joke, but Andrew didn’t miss a beat. “If that’s what you want, just tell me how much.”

Beatty laughed, shaking her head. “No, Mr. Lane, that’s not necessary. What happened back then was nothing special. I would’ve done the same for anyone else. It’s sweet of you to remember it all these years, but really, there’s no need to worry about it or try to make it up to me. If you handed me money, I’d actually feel kind of embarrassed.”

She shot him a playful wink. “I like to think of myself as someone who does the right thing just because it’s right. If you pay me now, it’ll feel like I only helped you for the reward, not because I wanted to.”

Andrew didn’t argue, but he wasn’t ready to let it go. “If not money, then anything else you want. No need to decide right now. Think about it and let me know later. I’ll do my best to make it happen.”

A promise from Andrew Lane was worth more than any check.

With things put that way, it felt rude to keep refusing him.

Beatty smiled, her tone light. “Alright, Mr. Lane. I’ll take my time, and when I think of something, I’ll let you know.”

Andrew just hummed in response, already glancing back at his phone.
