Larkin Porter gave a sly, almost mocking smile. “I saw the two of you together last night. Honestly, Mr. Lane, Ms. Blair, you don’t need to pretend nothing’s going on. Even if Mr. Lane is dating Ms. Blair, none of us care. After all, Ms. Blair isn’t some homewrecker. Unless, of course, Mr. Lane was still married when he started seeing her?”
His words landed with a jolt—everyone at the table was stunned.
Larkin’s insinuations were clear, his tone dripping with accusation. He was hinting, not so subtly, that Emily Blair was a mistress. No one present was naïve enough to miss the implication.
One was Andrew Lane, the heir to half the city’s business empire—The Lane Group. The other, Emily Blair, a rising star at Vertex International. Neither of them were people you could afford to offend.
If these two really were together, it would be a powerhouse alliance—one that would make enemies think twice.
And yet, with just a few words, Larkin had managed to antagonize them both. It was a bold, almost reckless move.
For a moment, no one dared to speak.
Andrew Lane’s eyes, dark and unreadable, fixed on Larkin in silence.
Emily Blair didn’t flinch. She lifted her gaze, her eyes sharp and clear. “Looks like that kick I gave you last night wasn’t hard enough. Your mouth’s running even faster today. What’s the matter? Spent the night nursing your wounds and now you’re feeling brave again?”
Larkin gave a short laugh. “Oh? Did I hit a nerve?”
The people nearby sucked in a collective breath.
Emily remained calm. “Maybe I hit you too hard in the head.”
This was Vanguard Automotive’s turf. Juliet Thomas, quick to sense which way the wind was blowing, immediately set her expression in stone.
“Whose employee is this? Doesn’t he know when to keep his mouth shut?”
Finally understanding, the executive faltered. “I… see…”
Larkin, his pride wounded after being dressed down twice in a row, felt his resentment only deepen. He’d just lost control and tried to provoke Emily and Andrew—now he was even angrier.
He scowled and snapped, “Why should I? This isn’t your property, and you’re not king around here.”
Both the executive and Juliet Thomas looked even grimmer.
The executive felt the situation spiraling. The employee he’d worked so hard to recruit from overseas was proving to be a disaster.
He ground his teeth, barking out, “Larkin Porter, have you lost your mind? This isn’t the place for your tantrums. I want you to book a flight and leave—right now. Don’t show your face here again.”
To drive the point home, he added, “And when you get back, you’ll write your own resignation and leave it on my desk. I won’t have someone this foolish on my team. Get out—now!”
