The next morning, when Lily finally opened her eyes, the sunlight was already spilling in through the curtains. She blinked a few times, confused by the sudden brightness, and turned to the side.
The bed was empty.
Her chest tightened instantly, anger boiling up without warning.
“Ahhh!” she grabbed the pillow and threw it across the room with all her strength. Then she grabbed another and screamed into it, tears slipping down her cheeks without her realizing.
She hated this. She hated everything about this.
Her hands shook as she wiped her face. She didn’t even know how to make David leave her life, didn’t know how to stop him from barging in whenever he wanted. She felt powerless, and it made her want to scream again.
Just then, a loud crash echoed from outside the bedroom. Something had fallen, or broken.
Her eyes widened.
“He… he hasn’t left?” Lily’s heart jumped into her throat.
She scrambled to her feet, grabbed the first set of clothes she could find, and hurriedly put them on. Her mind was racing with anger. If it’s him, I’ll kill him this time. I swear I’ll kill him.
Her steps were hard and fast as she stormed toward the door, but the second she stepped out, her body froze.
It wasn’t David.
Carson was standing in the kitchen, his tall figure hunched over the stove, moving around awkwardly. The entire place was a mess, plates scattered on the counter, flour spilled on the floor, and worst of all, smoke rising from a pan with a small flame licking the edges.
“Mr. Bennett!” Lily shouted, panic rushing through her as she ran forward. She quickly grabbed a towel, turned off the stove, and smothered the flame. “What are you doing?”
Carson turned, startled, his face breaking into an embarrassed smile the moment he saw her. “Oh. You’re awake.” He scratched the back of his neck, his cheeks slightly pink. “I… uh… made a mess.”
“A mess?” Lily’s eyebrows drew together as she scanned the destroyed kitchen. She had spent hours cleaning everything yesterday, making it neat, spotless, and perfect. And now, now it looked like a war zone.
She took a step, but Carson reached out and gently caught her wrist, stepping in front of her.
“Lily,” his voice was soft but serious, “is something wrong? Did I do something?”
She lifted her eyes reluctantly, meeting his gaze. His deep, searching eyes made her chest ache.
“Mr. Bennett,” she began, her voice steady even though her fingers trembled, “I don’t know what you want from me. But I can’t give you what you want. I’m not into anything you might expect from me. I only stayed here because I had nowhere else to go. I didn’t even think you’d come back. So let’s not make things complicated. Please.”
She pulled her hand free and walked quickly toward her room.
Inside, she pressed her back to the door, heart racing.
“Damn it,” she whispered to herself, sliding down to sit on the floor. She hated herself for being harsh, but she had to be. She couldn’t let Carson start thinking about her the way David did. She wasn’t easy, not someone who could be taken for granted. And she refused to live the kind of life she had with David all over again.
