Lily’s palms started sweating. Every time she turned her head, the headlights of that car glowed in her eyes. “Drive faster, Noah, please.”
Noah nodded, pressing the accelerator even harder. The car jolted forward. They passed through another junction, then took another turn. Noah tried to keep her calm, but her hands were shaking slightly.
“Are they still behind us?” she asked.
Lily turned around. “Yes,” she said. “They’re not leaving.”
Noah bit her lip. “Hold tight.”
She suddenly turned the wheel hard, taking an unexpected route a smaller road leading away from the main street. The tires screeched slightly, and Lily had to grab onto the side handle to steady herself.
The car behind them followed again.
Lily’s heart sank. “Noah, they’re not giving up.”
“Son of a....” Noah muttered. “Okay, we’ll see how long they can keep up.”
She pressed the pedal down again, the car speeding faster than before. The wind rushed through the small opening in the window, Lily’s hair flying slightly. Her heart was racing not just from fear but from anger too. Who dared to follow them like this?
As they turned another corner, Noah thought they finally managed to shake them off. She looked in the rearview mirror, and for a moment there was nothing.
“They’re gone,” she said, letting out a heavy breath. “Thank god.”
Lily leaned back, closing her eyes for a second. “That was crazy…”
“Yeah,” Noah said, trying to calm her racing heart. “Maybe it was just a coincidence. Could’ve been someone else who happened to take the same route.”
Lily opened her eyes and looked out again. She didn’t fully believe that. Her instincts told her otherwise. She’d learned long ago not to ignore her gut feelings.
“Still,” she said quietly, “be careful on the way back.”
“I will,” Noah replied, forcing a smile. “Now let’s get something to eat. I need food after this madness.”
Lily nodded, trying to ease her own tension. But before either of them could say more, the road ahead suddenly seemed to flash bright.
A loud horn blared from the opposite side.
Lily’s eyes widened as she saw a truck speeding straight toward them. “Noah!” she screamed.
Tears started to blur Noah’s eyes. Her chest tightened painfully, panic rising like a wave ready to drown her. “Please don’t do this to me,” she whispered, brushing Lily’s hair away from her face with trembling fingers.
“You’re okay. You’re fine. You’re just tired, right? Just open your eyes, please.”
She leaned closer, listening for Lily’s breathing , it was faint but there. Relief and fear mixed inside her like chaos. She looked around the car, her mind trying to focus.
The truck that had appeared suddenly on the road had already driven off, and the two cars that had been following them were nowhere in sight. It was quiet, too quiet.
The road stretched ahead under the faint glow of streetlights, empty and cold.
Noah’s hands shook as she searched for her phone. It had fallen near the footwell during the impact. She bent down, her hands fumbling across the floor until she found it. Her fingers were trembling so badly that she almost dropped it again when she tried to dial.
“Ambulance,” she said shakily when the line connected, her voice cracking. “Please, there’s been an accident on… on the old Riverside road near the tunnel. My friend is unconscious. Please, come fast!”
The operator asked her to stay calm and keep talking, but Noah could barely think straight. She kept glancing at Lily, terrified she might stop breathing any second.
“Yes, yes, she’s breathing but she’s bleeding from her head… please hurry,” she cried.
