Noah looked down at the floor, gripping her hands together tightly. “Who would do something like that? Lily doesn’t hurt anyone. We barely even talks to people outside work.”
The officer looked at her with quiet sympathy. “We’ll find out, Miss Noah. But for now, try not to worry. You and your friend are safe, and that’s what matters right now.”
Noah nodded, though her mind was spinning. Safe. The word sounded strange after everything that happened tonight.
After taking her statement, the officers thanked her and left. The room fell silent again, except for the steady beeping of the heart monitor beside Lily’s bed.
Noah sat down beside her, exhaustion finally creeping into her body. She leaned her elbows on her knees, pressing her palms over her face.
The events of the day played in her mind like broken film, Lily’s tired face in the car, the panic when she saw the cars following them, the sound of the tires screeching, the truck, the crash, the blood. She swallowed hard, trying not to cry again.
After a long while, she lifted her head and looked at Lily. “You know,” she murmured softly, “you always said bad luck follows you, but this time it feels like something else.”
She stood up and adjusted the blanket around Lily’s shoulders, tucking it neatly. “I don’t know who they were, but I promise I’ll find out,” she whispered.
The clock on the wall ticked softly. Lily’s chest rose and fell steadily, her breathing slow.
Noah sat there through the night, refusing to leave. Nurses came and went, checking Lily’s vitals, but she barely noticed them. She just sat, watching her best friend sleep, her mind replaying everything every second of what happened, every doubt, every fear.
When dawn finally broke, the pale morning light filled the ward. Noah was still sitting there, her head resting on her hand, eyes heavy with exhaustion. She hadn’t slept, not even for a minute.
Lily moved slightly, letting out a soft groan. Noah straightened immediately. “Lily? Hey, can you hear me?”
Lily’s eyelids fluttered, then slowly opened. Her eyes looked dazed at first, confused, then focused on Noah’s face.
“Noah…” she whispered weakly.
Noah smiled, tears instantly welling in her eyes again. “You scared me half to death,” she said, holding Lily’s hand. “Do you have any idea how worried I was?”
Lily blinked slowly, trying to remember. “you okay? The… the car…” she murmured.
“Yeah, I'm fine” Noah said softly, squeezing her hand. “But it’s over now. You’re safe. Don’t think about it, okay?”
Lily frowned faintly, her voice barely audible. “Those cars… they didn’t stop, did they?”
Noah hesitated before answering. “No. But the police are looking into it.”
Lily blinked several times, trying to steady her vision.
She nodded slowly, trying to piece everything together. Her heart was still racing, her mind spinning.
This wasn’t coincidence anymore.
Noah stood frozen near the wall, her eyes wide. She looked at Lily with a puzzled expression that clearly said what is this?
Lily avoided her gaze, equally lost.
“Calm down, Mr. Grey,” she said quietly. “It’s not as serious as it looks.”
But Jabco didn’t look convinced. He quickly grabbed the chair by her bedside and pulled it closer, sitting down with a sigh that sounded more like a groan of relief. His shoulders slumped forward, and he covered his face for a second, rubbing his temples hard.
“Thank God,” he muttered under his breath.
Noah and Lily exchanged glances again, this time with even more confusion.
“How… how did you even know?” Lily finally asked, frowning slightly.
Jabco opened his eyes, looking at her, still trying to catch his breath. “I got a call from Claire.”
“Claire?” Lily repeated, surprised. “Why would she...” She looked at Noah, her expression mirroring her confusion.
Noah hesitated, biting her lip. “Kind of,” she admitted. “Last night, Claire called your phone. It was late, maybe around two in the morning. She said it was urgent, something about a meeting being moved up. Since you were unconscious, I answered and told her what happened.”
Lily blinked slowly. It started to make sense now. “So… Claire told Mr. Grey?”
