My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 214

Lily froze. His arms around her were tight, desperate like he was afraid that if he let go, she’d vanish. She didn’t hug him back, but she didn’t push him away either.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to wait until tomorrow,” David whispered against her hair, his voice low and shaky. “I’m scared you’ll leave me if I walk away now.”

Lily’s heart skipped. Panic flashed in her eyes, but she forced a small, faint smile. “Just one day, David,” she said quietly. “I promise I won’t run away. Just… give me one day.”

David exhaled helplessly and nodded. “Alright,” he said softly. He pulled away slowly, looking at her for a moment longer. Then, before she could react, he cupped her face and pressed a light kiss to her lips.

Lily didn’t move. She didn’t respond, didn’t say a word. It was just a small kiss, gentle but full of sadness.

“Rest well, okay?” he said softly, brushing his thumb against her cheek.

Lily only nodded slightly.

David stepped back, hesitated for a second as if he wanted to say something more but instead, he turned and walked out of the room, his steps heavy and reluctant.

When the door finally closed, Lily stood there quietly, staring at it. Her heart was beating fast, and her hands trembled slightly. She sat down slowly on the edge of her bed, tears silently rolling down her cheeks.

The next morning, the sun hit David’s face and pulled him out of sleep. He blinked a few times, still half lost, then everything rushed back to him.

Lily.

He sat up fast. Last night he barely held himself back from calling her. His chest had felt tight the whole night, like something was slipping out of his hands, but he forced himself to stay still because she asked for one night.

He jumped out of bed, washed up, dressed quickly, and went downstairs. Roy was already waiting in the living room.

“Good morning, boss,” Roy greeted.

David gave a short nod.

“Breakfast is ready,” Roy said, pointing at the table.

“I’ll eat with Lily. Let’s go,” David said, already heading to the door.

Roy hurried after him.

On the way, David stopped at a flower shop and picked a bouquet. His face looked calm, but his hands were shaking. It was the first time he ever felt something like this—wanting someone so badly and hoping today things would change.

Roy stood behind him quietly, unable to hide a small smile. He never imagined he’d see David like this. The cold, distant man who used to treat Lily like she didn’t matter was now standing at her door hoping she’d smile at him.

David pressed the doorbell once. Twice. Then again.

Still no answer.

“Why isn’t she answering?” David asked, his voice tightening.

“Maybe she’s still asleep?” Roy said after thinking for a moment.

David’s stomach twisted. “Did something happen to her?” His voice trembled.

“I don’t think so,” Roy said quickly. “But… I have the key.”

David turned fast. “Key?”

Roy took a deep breath and reached into his coat pocket. “She gave it to me two days ago… when we needed to get clothes from her apartment for the hospital.”

David didn’t even wait for him to finish. He grabbed Roy’s wrist and pushed the key toward the lock, his heart pounding as he prayed nothing was wrong behind that door.

The moment the door opened, something inside David dropped. A strange emptiness wrapped around him like cold smoke. The place didn’t feel like Lily’s home. It felt hollow. Abandoned.

He stood at the entrance for a few seconds, not breathing. His fingers tightened around the flowers until a few petals fell.

“Lily…” he called softly. His own voice echoed back at him, and that echo scared him more.
