Lily let out a long breath and walked back toward David. He still stood there like he was carved out of stone.
“What are you doing? Go get Danish. We’re going home,” she said, her voice flat.
David stared at her for a second, his eyes unreadable, then turned around and walked back into the shop.
“He’s in the second room,” Noah said from behind the counter when she saw David walk in. She looked at Lily with a worried face, but Lily ignored it.
David went straight to the small room. Danish was curled up on the bed, deeply asleep. David bent down and lifted him into his arms with slow movements, like he didn’t want to wake him. His expression didn’t change, but he held the boy carefully.
He stepped out with Danish resting against his shoulder.
“We’re leaving. Bye and thank you,” Lily said, waving at Noah as if nothing was wrong.
“Be careful,” Noah said, giving Lily that look again… the look that said she didn’t trust David at all.
Lily rolled her eyes. "I'll be fine" she muttered under her breath.
One of the guards rushed to open the car door. David gently placed Danish inside and buckled him up. Then he got in the backseat next to him.
Lily walked around to the other side and sat down too, leaving some distance between them.
“My apartment,” she told the driver.
The car started moving.
Inside, it felt like the air was made of glass. One wrong sound and it would break.
David didn’t say a single word.
Not even a glance.
He sat stiffly, eyes closed, his jaw tight. Lily kept stealing looks at him, trying to understand what was going on inside his head, but she couldn’t read him at all.
He looked calm, but she knew this wasn’t calm. This was the kind of silence that came right before a storm.
When they reached the apartment, David carried Danish inside. He laid the boy on the bed and pulled the blanket over him. After that, he stepped out of the room and looked around.
Lily wasn’t in the living room.
Then he heard a soft sound coming from room.
Her room.
David walked toward it without thinking. The door was half closed. He reached out and pushed it a little.
“Yeah, I’m good… okay… I know, I’ll see you tomorrow,” Lily said. Her voice was soft, tired, but she was smiling.
A real smile. A gentle one.
David froze at the doorway.
