Lily’s phone buzzed on the desk. She glanced at the screen. It was Jabco calling.
“You’re going to see him?” Noah asked right away.
“I have a meeting with him,” Lily said with a small nod.
“Why?” Noah pushed.
Lily blinked at her, confused. “What’s wrong with you today? You’re acting strange.”
“Nothing. I’m just worried,” Noah said and waved it off, but her eyes said something else.
“You don’t need to worry. I’m not planning to marry anyone. My life is fine the way it is.” Lily got up with a tired sigh. “I’ll be late, so take care of Danish. And if David comes, let him take Danish with him.”
“Why are you letting Danish get close to David?” Noah suddenly asked. “What if David tries to get custody of him? What if Danish chooses his father?”
The question hit Lily like ice in her veins. Her body went still. For a second, she forgot how to breathe. But she quickly forced a smile, trying to hide the fear crawling up her chest.
“He won’t do that. If he wanted to, he would’ve already done something by now,” she said, though her own voice didn’t sound convincing even to her.
Noah chuckled softly and stood up. “How can you be so sure? Look outside.”
“What?” Lily frowned and walked toward the window.
When she looked down, her jaw tightened in anger. David’s bodyguards were still standing outside Noah’s shop like they owned the street.
“Damn it. This man,” she muttered under her breath.
“I think he doesn’t want you out of his sight,” Noah said. “And he definitely doesn’t trust you.”
Lily let out a long breath. “Then let him watch. I’m going out the back door. And don’t you dare tell him where I am. I’m not dealing with his drama today.”
She grabbed her bag and headed for the door.
“Lily,” Noah called softly.
Lily stopped and turned slightly.
“Think about what I said today. You’re the only family I have. I don’t want you to suffer again.”
Lily didn’t answer. She pushed the door open and stepped out. But even though she ignored Noah’s words, something in her chest tightened. Something she didn’t want to face just yet.
She walked down the hall with a heavy heart, trying to convince herself she wasn’t shaken.
But she was.
It was already very late when Lily finally came back. She was a little drunk, so Jabco drove her. When he stopped the car in front of Noah’s shop, Lily pushed the door open slowly.
“You alright?” Jabco asked. He had noticed she’d looked stressed since Noah’s call earlier.
