Lily felt like her chest tightened. It wasn’t fear. It wasn’t anger. It was too much emotion mixing together. She pushed his hands off and hurriedly wiped the rest of her tears.
"I don’t need your sweet words," she said coldly.
"Keep them to yourself." She turned around and walked out of the room.
David lowered his eyes. For a moment, he didn’t move. He felt empty and helpless, like he was standing in a broken place he created himself. He closed his eyes and took a slow breath.
One thing he knew. No matter how long it took, he wouldn’t leave Lily again. He would wait.
Just as he stepped toward the door, his phone buzzed. He pulled it out. It was his mother.
"Yeah, Mum?"
"I heard you met Lily. Bring her and my grandson for dinner tonight. I want to see him. I miss him so much," Olivia said.
"Alright, I’ll tell Lily," he replied and ended the call.
Then he froze.
Miss him so much? She had never met Danish before. Why did she sound like she already knew him? None of it made sense.
Before he could think it through, the door suddenly flew open. Lily rushed inside with fire in her eyes.
David straightened. "What’s wrong?"
She stormed up to him, grabbed his collar, and yanked him closer. "I trusted you with my son for one day. One day. And you failed to protect him. How dare you let someone hurt my child?"
David blinked. Shock and confusion mixed slowly on his face. "What are you talking about?"
Lily gritted her teeth, anger shaking her voice. "When I went to Danish, he was crying his heart out. He told me he met someone in your office yesterday. Now everything makes sense why he react like this. You let your lover hurt my son!"
David finally understood. His face hardened. "So Danish told you about yesterday."
"This is enough." Lily’s voice cracked.
"You...."
David grabbed both her wrists and pulled her hands off his collar. His eyes were sharp now.
"Listen. I have nothing with Marina. Nothing. Yes, I protected her before. Yes, that accident happened. But I never crossed a line with her after we married. You know this. I told you everything seven years ago."
Lily’s breath hitched, but she didn’t speak.
"And yesterday," he continued.
"I was in a meeting. She walked into my office without warning. If I knew, I would've never let her near my son. She told Danish something stupid, and believe me, she got her punishment already."
He swallowed hard and lowered his voice. "I’m sorry she hurt him. I really am."
Lily’s jaw tightened. "Damn you, David. Saying sorry doesn’t erase the pain."
She jerked her wrists free and turned away.
"Lily..." he tried softly.
"Get out of my room," she snapped without turning back.
David went still for a second. Then he nodded once. "Alright." He didn’t argue. He didn’t explain further. He just walked out quietly, closing the door behind him.
David walked out of Lily’s room slowly, like his feet were made of stone. The house was silent except for his own breathing. He rubbed his face with both hands, trying to calm himself before going to his son.
Everything was tangled together, and he was standing in the middle of the mess.
He sighed and walked toward Danish’s room.
