My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 256

David pulled out his phone right away, his other hand still on her face like he couldn’t move it even if he wanted to. He called Roy.

“Bring Lily something to eat,” he said, voice firm but soft at the edges. He hung up and slipped the phone back into his pocket.

“How is Danish?” Lily asked, her voice shaking.

David turned his eyes back to her. “He was scared. Really scared. But he’s fine now. He left with Mum just before you woke up. You want me to call him back?”

She shook her head weakly. “Let him be.”

“Alright.” He stood up slowly, adjusting her pillow and helping her lie down more comfortably. “Rest. Your body needs it.”

She kept watching him. Every move he made. Every small thing he did. His face, the exhaustion in it. The way his hands trembled when he touched the blanket. The way his eyes softened each time they met hers.

His calmness felt new. Different. It almost hurt her chest in another way.

She knew he must have panicked. She knew he didn’t sleep. She could see it in the way his shoulders slumped. In the way he sat on the chair like he’d been in that same position for hours without moving. His beard was uneven. His hair messy. He looked older in just two days, like those hours had carved lines into him.

He covered her with the small blanket and sat back down. He pulled his chair so close their knees almost touched.

“If you feel anything uncomfortable, just tell me,” he said quietly. “Anything at all.”

She nodded. Her eyes went to their hands again. His thumb kept brushing over and over again on her skin. But she noticed something now.

His thumb trembled.

Just slightly. But it did.

Lily remembered Marina’s words.

How he waited for her for seven years.

Didn’t touch anyone else.

Didn’t even look at another woman.

How he cried for her.

How he broke down more than once.

All of that floated in her mind, mixing with the memory of what he had done years ago. The pain he caused. The things she couldn’t forget no matter how hard she tried.

She wasn’t a cruel woman. She couldn’t pretend she didn’t see the truth right in front of her.

If he was truly sincere…

If he truly regretted everything…

Then ignoring him like he was nothing wasn’t something she could do forever.

Her eyes dropped to their hands again. Slowly, she slipped her smaller hand under his and held it.

David froze.

He looked down at their hands as if he wasn’t sure he saw correctly. Then he lifted his eyes to her, and for a moment he didn’t breathe.

“I’m scared…” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Can I hold your hand while I sleep?”

Damn her heart.

Damn her pride.

Damn her stupid ego.

She still couldn’t admit it out loud, but she needed him.

His grip tightened instantly, as if her hand was something precious he was afraid to drop.

“You don’t have to ask me,” he said in a low voice. “Just hold me whenever you want.”
