My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 258

Lily wrapped both her hands around the warm cup of coffee, staring at the surface like it might give her an answer.

“I really don’t understand him,” she said, her voice tight with frustration.

“He’s so unpredictable. One moment he’s there, the next he’s gone. He doesn’t explain anything.”

Noah was sitting across from her in her office, leaning back slightly in her chair. She took a slow sip of her coffee and watched Lily carefully. Since she arrived, all she had talked about was David. Every complaint, every sigh, every confused thought somehow circled back to him.

“Then try to understand him,” Noah said calmly.

Lily looked up at her, annoyed. “How? He doesn’t say anything. Not a word. What am I supposed to understand from silence?”

Noah sighed. She set her cup down and leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table.

“Have you looked at yourself lately?” Noah asked gently, but firmly. “You’ve been pushing him away the whole time. How do you expect him to open his mouth when you shut every door before he even tries?”

“I…” Lily opened her mouth, then closed it again. No words came out.

Noah didn’t stop.

“When you were unconscious for two days,” she continued, “he was like a man who had lost everything. He didn’t move from that chair. Not even once. He didn’t eat properly, didn’t sleep. His eyes…” Noah paused, her voice lowering. “They were empty, Lily. Completely empty.”

Lily’s fingers tightened around the cup.

“Not just his mother,” Noah went on, “even I was scared seeing him like that. He was terrified, but he didn’t cry. He didn’t scream. He just sat there, quiet, like his soul had already left his body.”

Lily looked away, her gaze unfocused. Her chest felt heavy.

“If you had seen him in that moment,” Noah added softly, “you wouldn’t be standing here acting like this. You would’ve cried too.”

For a while, Lily didn’t say anything. Her mind felt blank. She had known he must have been worried. But hearing it like this made something twist painfully inside her.

Still, part of her resisted.

“I don’t know,” she finally said. “If he’s not going to talk, I’m not going to ask. Let him be. Why should I care?” She lifted her hands in frustration. “I’m tired.”

Noah stared at her for a second.

Then she snapped.

“You know what?” Noah said sharply. “Go to hell.”

Lily blinked in surprise.

Noah stood up, clearly fed up. “I’m done trying to make you understand. You’re impossible when you get stubborn.”

Lily quickly changed the topic. “Fine. Forget him. I actually came to talk about Danish’s school.”

Noah paused, then sat back down, crossing her arms.

“I’m thinking of admitting him to Nini’s school,” Lily continued. “What do you think?”
