His tears. His guilt. His words about waiting. His sadness. His fear of losing her again.
Was it all an act?
The anger rushed through her veins like fire.
Her blood boiled.
“So this is it,” she muttered bitterly. “This is your truth.”
Her hand tightened around the phone.
Without giving herself time to hesitate, Lily went to his contact and blocked his number.
One press. Final.
“If you think you can play with me,” she whispered, her voice shaking with fury, “you’re wrong.”
She wasn’t that woman anymore.
She wasn’t the Lily Collins who waited patiently while being hurt for other women. She wasn’t the one who crawled back no matter how much pain he caused.
If David thought he could walk in and out of her life, pulling her close one moment and pushing her away the next, he was mistaken.
Very mistaken.
Lily placed the phone face down on the table and lay back on the bed, staring into the darkness.
Her heart hurt.
But her resolve was firm.
This time, she wouldn’t break.
The next morning, Lily woke up slowly.
At first, she thought she was still dreaming.
A warm smell filled the room. Something rich. Something comforting. Oil, spices, bread, eggs. Food.
Her brows pulled together in confusion.
She sat up on the bed and rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand. Her head still felt heavy from the restless night. She turned to the side without thinking, reaching out.
The bed was empty.
“Danish?” she murmured.
The smell of food grew stronger.
“Where is this coming from?” she whispered, her voice confused now.
She slid off the bed and walked toward the door, her steps quick and silent. The moment she stepped out of the room, she froze.
Her entire body went still.
David was standing in her kitchen.
Her kitchen.
He was wearing a simple shirt with the sleeves rolled up. His hair was a little messy, like he hadn’t styled it properly. He was holding a spatula, standing in front of the stove as if he belonged there.
And Danish.
Her son was sitting on the kitchen island, swinging his legs happily, watching David like it was the most normal thing in the world.
Lily’s chest tightened.
“What are you doing here?” she asked sharply.
Her voice cut through the room.
David turned around slowly. When he saw her, there was a faint smile on his lips. Soft. Careful. Like he didn’t want to scare her.
“You’re awake,” he said calmly. “Sit down. Breakfast is almost ready.”
That smile.
That calm voice.
After last night.
After a woman had answered his phone.
Lily’s fingers curled into fists.
She wanted to laugh. Loudly,Bitterly. Right in his face. But she swallowed it down.
Instead, she rolled her eyes and walked to the dining table. She pulled out a chair and sat down hard.
She didn’t say anything.
She just sat there and watched him move around her kitchen like it was his home. Like nothing was wrong. Like they were some perfect family having breakfast together.
This sight felt unreal.
Almost cruel.
“Mum!” Danish suddenly jumped down from the island and ran toward her. “Dad is making spaghetti for me!”
“For breakfast?” Lily asked, raising an eyebrow.
Danish nodded excitedly. “Yes!”
She looked at her son, then slowly turned her gaze toward the man in the kitchen.
David glanced at her and gave her a quick smile before turning back to the pot.
“Do you like your dad’s cooking?” Lily asked casually as Danish climbed onto the chair beside her.
“Yes!” Danish nodded again. “It’s yummy.”
Lily hummed softly.
Then she spoke again, her voice light but sharp underneath.
“Well,” she said, glancing toward the kitchen from the corner of her eye, “if in the future Mum gets married again, you can stay with your dad.”
David’s hand froze for a second.
Noah.
She noticed immediately how David’s eyes lifted toward her.
An idea flashed through her mind.
“Yes, sweetheart,” Lily answered sweetly.
On the other side, Noah went completely silent.
“What?” she said finally, confused by her tone.
“Oh my goodness,” Noah gasped dramatically. “Is there a storm in the city today?”
Lily let out a small laugh, like she was shy.
“Yes, babe,” she continued. “We’re meeting today.”
Noah frowned. “What are you talking about? I didn’t say anything.....”
“Alright,” Lily cut her off softly. “I understand. You hang up, and I’ll be there.”
She ended the call.
Danish was staring at her with wide eyes.
“Mum,” he asked slowly, “is that the man you’re going to marry?”
Lily froze for a brief second.
Then she remembered David was watching.
She nodded.
“Yes, babe,” she said gently. “I’ll introduce you to him later. You’ll love him. He’s a gentleman.”
David’s face had gone completely blank.
“You eat breakfast with your dad,” Lily said, standing up. “I have work. I’m leaving.”
She didn’t even look at David as she walked back to her room.
The moment she closed the door, she leaned against it and let out a long breath.
Her hands were shaking.
What am I doing?
This is childish.
How did I even start playing like this?
She was still stunned by herself when suddenly....
Bang.
The door slammed open.
Lily gasped and stepped back just in time.
