After the admission work was finally done, Danish was taken inside for his class. He kept turning back, waving at them with a big smile, clearly excited and a little nervous at the same time.
Lily waved back until he disappeared into the classroom.
When they walked out of the school building, the air between Lily and David felt tight again. Too quiet. Too heavy.
As they stepped down the steps, Lily’s eyes caught a white car parked across the road.
She stopped walking.
“I’m leaving on my own now,” she said, her voice calm but firm. “And you pick Danish up after school. I won’t be able to.”
David immediately turned to her.
“What do you mean you won’t be able to?” he asked, irritation clear in his tone. “Where are you going?”
Lily didn’t even look at him properly.
“I don’t need to tell you everything,” she said flatly. “Bye.”
She lifted her hand in a careless wave and started toward the zebra crossing.
“Lily...” David followed her. “I’m asking you something. Do you really have to test my patience all the time?”
She stopped suddenly and turned around, her eyes sharp.
“I’m not teasing you,” she snapped. “Can’t I have my own time? And you already know where I’m going. Do you want me to say it clearly?”
She leaned closer, her teeth clenched.
“Fine. I’m going to see my date.”
David froze.
His lips twitched, his jaw tightening hard. His eyes darkened so fast it scared even Lily for a second.
“Lily…” he said, low and warning, like he was about to explode.
She lifted a finger at him immediately.
“We are in a public place,” she warned. “So don’t even think about ruining my image. I don’t have money like you to control everything.”
Just then, the traffic light changed. People started crossing the road.
Lily turned and walked fast with the crowd. But after a few steps, she noticed something and stopped again.
Joy and David were still following her.
She spun around, completely losing it.
“David!” she shouted. “If you follow me, or if you let him follow me, I swear I’ll grab one man from this street and kiss him right in front of you!”
People around them started staring. Some slowed down, curious. Some whispered.
David didn’t care about any of them.
But her words hit him hard.
He stared at her. Lily stared back. It was a silent challenge between them.
Finally, David took a step back.
“Fine,” he said tightly. “But you have to come home on time. And you are not allowed to meet any man.”
Lily rolled her eyes so hard it almost hurt.
She turned away.
“If you dare follow me,” she threw back over her shoulder, “I’ll show you exactly who you’re dealing with.”
She crossed the road quickly.
When she reached the other side, she couldn’t stop herself. She turned back.
David was still standing there.
He hadn’t moved.
His eyes were fixed on her, full of something heavy. Pain. Helplessness. Things he never said out loud.
Her chest tightened.
Damn it.
