My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 28

She shoved him away, her palms flat against his chest. “Don’t touch me,” she hissed under her breath.

David didn’t look fazed. If anything, there was a flicker of something dangerous in his eyes—possession, arrogance, something she’d seen too many times before.

Without another word, she spun around and hailed the first cab that screeched to a halt. Her fingers trembled as she yanked open the door and slid inside.

“Hotel.....” she gave the name quickly, barely glancing at the driver.

She caught a glimpse of David in the side mirror, walking to his own car, calm as if nothing had happened. Of course he was following her. Of course he wouldn’t let her just walk away.

The entire ride, she sat stiff, staring out the window at the blur of streetlights. Her reflection in the glass looked pale, tired… angry. Why now? Why this sudden interference in her life when he had left her to rot before?

When the cab stopped in front of the hotel, she paid quickly and hurried toward the lobby. The air-conditioned blast from inside hit her, but it didn’t cool the boiling frustration in her chest. She just wanted to get upstairs, shut the door, and breathe.

She pressed the elevator button with more force than necessary, tapping her foot impatiently. The doors slid open, and she stepped inside, exhaling sharply. Just as the doors were about to close, a hand slipped in between.

David.

She clenched her jaw. “What the hell are you doing here? Why are you following me?”

“I’m not following you,” he said casually, stepping in as though the elevator was his. “I stay here.”

She shot him a glare. “Why? I can’t?” he added with a smirk.

Lily turned away, not trusting herself to speak without shouting. Her hands gripped the strap of her bag so tightly her knuckles ached. Her breathing was uneven, the weight of so many old fights pressing down on her. She didn’t understand what he was playing at. What was the point of barging back into her life now?

The elevator chimed and stopped at the tenth floor. She stepped out quickly, hoping he would finally take the hint.

But his footsteps followed her.

She stopped mid-step and turned around, her eyes blazing. “Seriously?”

David looked at her without blinking.

She bit her tongue. No. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing her explode. Without a word, she turned and walked down the hallway toward her room.

Sliding her key card, she pushed the door open—only to freeze.

The door next to hers clicked open, and out stepped David, holding his own card.

For a moment, she thought she might actually scream.

He leaned against the doorframe, a slow, provoking smile spreading across his lips. “Let’s have a talk.”
