The next day, Lily dressed with deliberate care. She wore a fitted black blazer over a silk blouse the color of deep wine, paired with tailored trousers. Her makeup was subtle, but her lipstick was bold—enough to say she was serious, not desperate. She carried only a slim portfolio and her phone. The chauffeur dropped Lily at the entrance of the grand venue, a glass-walled private club that seemed to hover above the city lights. She had expected a quiet meeting in a corporate office or perhaps an upscale restaurant—not this. As she stepped out, the sound of music and the hum of mingled laughter reached her before the doors even opened.
The valet greeted her with a polite bow and opened the heavy glass door. Inside, the space glowed with warm amber lights and polished marble floors. Crystal chandeliers swayed gently overhead, scattering light across the champagne glasses clinking in guests’ hands.
Her first impression was confusion. This didn’t look like a place for business negotiations—it looked like an exclusive celebration. Then, from the far side of the room, she caught sight of the man she had come to meet.
Jacob.
She had imagined him as a stern middle-aged man with silver hair and an expensive watch. Instead, he was young—perhaps only a few years older than her—lean, with sharp features and an easy smile that made people gravitate toward him. His tailored suit was impeccable, but it was his confidence that caught her attention.
Before she could make her way to him, a woman in a black silk gown approached her.
“Miss Lily?” she asked, her tone warm but efficient.
“Mr. Jacob sends his apologies. He received your call unexpectedly and is currently engaged with some urgent guests. He said to tell you...” she lowered her voice, “please enjoy the evening as his personal guest. He will join you later.”
Lily blinked. “Oh… alright. Thank you.”
The woman handed her a crystal flute of champagne before disappearing into the crowd.
For a moment, Lily stood still, taking in her surroundings. The room was filled with people she had only ever seen in business magazines and tech interviews founders, investors, and innovators who shaped industries with a single decision. It was both intimidating and fascinating. She moved to the side, preferring to blend into the background, and let her gaze wander.
That was when she saw him.
David.
The sight of him was like an unexpected splash of cold water. He was standing near the bar, his posture relaxed but commanding, speaking to a small group of men in suits. And beside him linked to his arm was Marina.
Lily’s chest tightened involuntarily. Marina looked radiant in a champagne-colored gown, laughing lightly at something David had just whispered. The easy familiarity between them was impossible to ignore.
For a moment, Lily considered turning away, pretending she hadn’t seen them. But her feet seemed rooted to the spot.
David’s gaze shifted, and their eyes met across the crowd.
