My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 90

Before she could reach the doorway, the world tilted — he was up so fast she barely had time to react. David moved like someone who always knew the fastest route to get what he wanted. One second she was walking away, the next an arm was around her waist and she was lifted off her feet.

“What are you doing? Put me down!” she snapped, panic rising in her voice. She kicked out instinctively, hands pawing at his shoulders. Her heart hammered.

He didn’t let go. Instead, he carried her back to the bed and eased her down, then lay beside her like it was perfectly natural to claim that space. He wrapped his arms around her, not tight enough to hurt, but not loose either, a hold that said he wasn’t letting her go.

She pushed his arm away, trying to get up. “Get off me, David. Stop this.”

He tightened his grip a fraction and kept her under him. “Don’t move, sleep,” he said.

“I don’t need you to decide that for me,” she said, anger and exhaustion threading her words. Her hands pushed his chest, feeling the hard muscle under her palms. “I’m not a sleeping with you.”

He stared at her, his face unreadable. For a long moment they were both still, the room filling with the soft sound of the city outside. Then he propped himself on an elbow and looked down at her.

“If you’re not planning to sleep, we can always find something else to do,” David murmured, his face inching closer.

Lily’s eyes flew wide. She muttered a curse under her breath, glaring at him.

David only gave a small shrug, unfazed. “Fine, I’ll sleep.”

She quickly turned her head away, shutting her eyes tight. She forced herself to take a slow breath — the room felt smaller than it was, heavy with his presence, their bodies sharing the same bed.

Silence stretched between them. Then, without warning, he leaned over and pressed a kiss to her forehead. Not the rough, hungry kind from earlier — this one was softer, almost natural, his hand brushing gently through her hair.

“Sleep,” he said in a low, rough voice.

Lily opened her eyes for a moment, studying the firm line of his jaw, the hardness in his expression. She didn’t trust him — not at all. But somewhere deep inside, a weary part of her craved rest.

So she let her eyes fall shut again. Outside, the city moved on with its own rhythm. Inside, the quiet of the room deepened, their breaths slowly falling into sync. She wasn’t free, not yet. But as she drifted toward sleep, clutching the blanket tight, she clung to one silent promise: one day she would break free. One day, she would walk away and never look back.

The next morning, sunlight spilled weakly through the curtains, painting soft lines across the bed. Lily stirred slowly, her body heavy with exhaustion. When her eyes blinked open, she reached instinctively to the side — only to find the space cold and empty.

For a moment, she lay there, staring at the vacant side of the bed. A strange, hollow feeling touched her chest. It was unfamiliar, and it unsettled her. She quickly shook her head and pushed it away. What was she even thinking? It’s better like this. He’s gone. That’s how it should be.

Dragging herself upright, Lily slipped out of bed, smoothing her tangled hair with her fingers. Her bare feet padded quietly against the floor as she stepped out of the room. But the moment she entered the living area, her steps faltered.

David was there.

He sat comfortably on the couch, dressed neatly, a steaming cup of coffee in hand. The smell of roasted beans filled the air. He looked too calm, as if last night hadn’t happened at all.

“You’re awake,” David said, his deep voice steady. He placed the cup down on the table and stood up, straightening his sleeves as if he was heading out for a meeting. “Get ready. I’ll drop you off at your work before going to the hospital.”

After spending some time with Olivia, Lily checked her watch. She had a meeting scheduled with Claire at the company. She stood up, smoothing her blouse.

“I’ll come back later, Mum. I have to go for a meeting,” she said gently.

“Alright, dear. Take care of yourself,” Olivia nodded, giving her a small smile.

David immediately stood up as well. “I’ll drop you.”

Lily stiffened. She hadn’t expected him to say that. For a second, she thought about refusing. But Olivia was watching, and she didn’t want to create another scene here. So she only gave a brief nod.

The drive to the company was no less tense than before.

When they stopped in front of the company building, David finally spoke, his voice low.

“I’ll come to pick you up after work.”

Lily’s head snapped toward him, eyes sharp. “There’s no need. I can go home by myself.”

David’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t argue further. He just stared at her for a moment, his eyes unreadable.
