Chapter 3
My parents moved quickly. Within days, they had a set of divorce papers drafted.
But for several days in a row, Nathaniel didn’t come home.
The messages I sent through iMessage went unanswered.
After thinking it over, I decided to go directly to Reed Group.
The atmosphere at the annual gala was lively and extravagant.
The moment employees recognized me, whispers erupted.
“Why is she here?”
“Married all these years, never had a wedding, and she wasn’t even invited to the company gala-just showed
up on her own?”
“Right? The mistress is practically rubbing it in his face, refusing to get a divorce no matter what-some people really have no shame.”
I pretended not to hear.
My eyes locked onto Nathaniel on stage.
He offered a faint smile.

“Next, I’d like to announce our company’s Outstanding Contribution Award.”
“It goes to-Sophia Reed.”
Amid applause, Sophia walked up to the stage.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Back when I graduated senior year of college, Nathaniel’s company had just been getting off the ground.
My major aligned perfectly with his business. I had wanted to join and help him build it.
He had refused firmly.
“Evelyn, it’s not that I don’t want you here.”
“But a company can’t mix business with personal matters.”
“Business is business, personal is personal-that’s the only way to run a company properly.”
I had understood how hard he was working and chose to gain experience elsewhere.
I never imagined he would hire Sophia-who hadn’t even finished high school-and then publicly award her at the annual gala.

My chest tightened, and my eyes burned before I even realized I was on the verge of tears. When I looked up, my gaze collided with Nathaniel’s.
His smile stiffened.
When he saw my tears fall, his hand lifted instinctively, as if to wipe them away.
Then something seemed to occur to him, and he lowered it.
While Sophia was giving her acceptance speech, he stepped offstage and pulled me out of the ballroom.
“What are you doing here?” he demanded, brows furrowed.
“Outstanding Contribution Award?” I let out a quiet, bitter laugh. “What exactly did she contribute?”
“You wouldn’t let me work at the company, but you made room for her.”
“If I hadn’t come today, how long were you planning to keep this from me?”
As my questions piled up, his expression only grew calmer.
“I told you before. I’m not him.”
“Andrew’s gone-no one wants to see

“When are you going to learn to see the bigger picture? I don’t even know what ‘he’ ever saw in you.”
He shifted every bit of blame onto his so-called other persona, his face steady and unshaken.
My nails dug into my palms hard enough to break skin.
For years, he had done this-pushed everything onto that imaginary alter ego.
Then, when he put his wedding ring back on, he would cry and beg for forgiveness.
And I had always softened.
I always blamed the hurt on Nathaniel’s “condition” and my own miscarriage. I never considered that it had
all been a performance.
Then his assistant, Daniel Carter, knocked on the door, reminding Nathaniel it was time for his company gala
speech. “You want to know what Sophia contributed?”
“I’ll tell you.”
“She’s pregnant. She’s carrying the heir to the Reed family.”
“Well? Satisfied now?”
