After I got married, my husband’s childhood friend, Grace Rivera, suddenly developed intermittent explosive disorder.

Her episodes always happened with freakish accuracy, specifically whenever she and I were alone.

The first time, she pushed me down the stairs as I was pregnant without my husband, Finn Harris, at home.

She almost killed me and the baby.

The second time, she kicked me square in the stomach right when I was starting to show.

She made me miscarry on the spot.

Every time after, she would hurt herself out of so-called guilt and end up in the ER.

Then came my third pregnancy. She broke into our house again and stabbed me in the gut.

Both my fallopian tubes were severed. I might never be able to have kids.

Like clockwork, she cried bitterly and apologized, “Finn, let me be a surrogate for Ella to make it right, then I’ll just kill myself!”

Finn gave her a slap that was more of a tap.

Then, same as before, he tossed a letter of forgiveness in front of me and asked me to sign.

He said, “Grace didn’t mean to do that. I have already taught her a lesson.

“She is even willing to have a baby to make up for it. Don’t be so hard on someone who’s sick.”

I looked at Finn, my ignorant husband, with cold eyes and smiled as I nodded.

I said, “I won’t sign unless you agree to sign the divorce papers.”

As the words left my mouth, both Finn and Grace froze.

Finn shot up from his chair, gripping the rails on both sides of my hospital bed.

His voice spiked full of pure disbelief as he said, “Ella, are you insane?”

I saw my own pale, gaunt face reflected in his dark eyes. I was still weak because of the miscarriage.

The bed jolted from his movement, sending a rip of pain through my incision.

I gave a deep shudder.

Finn saw it and softened, brushing my brow gently.

He said gently to comfort me, “Ella, I know this is hard. But don’t say things you don’t mean, okay?

“You’re an orphan. You don’t have a job. You can’t make it without me. I swear I’ll make this up to you.”

His palms were warm, but my heart stayed ice cold.

I had heard this too many times.

Therefore, I pushed his hand away and said it again, steady, “Are you sure you don’t want a divorce? Then I’m taking Grace to

court.”

The tenderness on Finn’s face slowly shattered. He looked wounded and said in a trembling voice, “Ella, Grace’s parents died because of me. I can’t abandon her when she is sick. You’ve always known that.”

I closed my eyes and smiled bitterly.

I got why he felt guilty.

However, Grace was not really sick.

I was sure that she feigned an illness.

Five years ago, Grace’s parents died in a crash on their way to cut the ribbon at Finn’s new company.

They were coming to back Finn up. Unfortunately, they never made it.

After the funeral, Finn brought a shattered Grace to live with us.

She had nightmares every night. So for the first three months of our marriage, Finn stayed by her bed until she fell asleep.
