I knew it was stupid to try and relax or let my guard down.

Panic speared through me as Kai walked out of the room. The next time I saw him, he’d have new information. What if part of it had something to do with me? What if the news he’d get included what Lucas had done to me?

It was very easy for news to spread, especially news like that.

I resisted the urge to press my ears to the door to try and listen, mostly because his secretary was staring at me out of the corner of my eye.

Slowly, I trudged towards the elevator, mentally preparing for the disgust that would come after he found out.

“Hey,” a voice called out to me and I stopped in

my

tracks.

His secretary had moved from her spot and was heading over to me, her hips swaying in her black dress and her heels making clicking sounds on the floor. I waited patiently, anxiously even, as she stopped in front of me.

“Sorry to do this, but are you really the Alpha’s mate?” she asked, her voice soft but excited. “I heard the rumors yesterday but I didn’t think-”

“I think you should ask him,” I cut her off.

She snorted. “He doesn’t answer questions about his personal life. If I even dared to ask he’d probably fire me.”

“Then why ask me?”

She fell silent. Her mouth opened and closed, but no words would come out. For the longest minute, she just stared at me.

“I didn’t think-” she trailed off. “I just thought that you’d tell me. Girl to girl, you

know?”

She tried to touch me but I stepped out of her way.

“I don’t even know you,” I said simply, trying to hide the annoyance in my voice. “There is no girl to girl.”

Her cheeks turned a bright shade of pink, but I couldn’t bring myself to feel embarrassed for her. She was looking for quick gossip, and she thought she could use me to get that. I had no intentions of being her source.

I’d seen enough of her type of people at my old pack.

“You didn’t have to be so mean about it,” she mumbled finally. “I was just trying to be nice. Here I thought you were going to

be fun.”

“Sorry to disappoint,” I drawled, turning on my heels to walk away.

Behind me, I heard her mutter the word bitch. I sighed, refusing to turn back or take her bait. She could call me whatever she wanted.

When the elevator doors opened on the ground floor, I found Scarlett standing there.

“Oh, you’re already here!” she exclaimed, reaching for my hand. At least I don’t have to go all the way upstairs. Are you ready?”

I shrugged. “I guess so.”

“It’ll be fun, I promise,” she assured me, leading me through the obby and past the watchful eyes. “Ignore them, they’re just curious about who you are.”

That was true, but not for everyone. Some were genuinely curios, but there were hateful glares and suspicious glances mixed in the sea. I didn’t blame them much, I was a wolf in the midst of lycans. I was inherently weaker than them, and I was their Alpha’s mate… I’d be their Luna.

“Hey,” Scarlett stopped in her tracks abruptly making me bump to her. “Don’t worry about them.”

“I wasn’t worried.”

She gave me a soft smile. “You have a very expressive face, Daisy I could practically read your mind if I wanted to.”

My cheeks burned. “Sorry.”

“It’s not a bad quality. Just try to enjoy the ride as much as you can. You’ll find that this pack isn’t so bad.”

I wanted to believe her.

I really did.

So I shrugged and started moving. Thankfully, she took the hint and followed.

Scarlett was surprisingly good company.

She took me to a large mall. If people knew who I was here, they didn’t care. It was so busy that no one spared me more than a glance. It was a breath of fresh air after the encounter at the pack office.

She dragged me through different shops, pulling clothes off the Hacks and shoving me into dressing rooms until I was exhausted and my feet burned.

I’d never had the chance to shop this way before. Dad only ever bought what he thought I needed, and he never asked my opinion. The only time I ever got to shop was when I was paid for helping out around the pack house.

“Can we take a break now?” I asked after the nth store. “I feel like we’ve been walking for hours.”

Scarlett pouted. “But we haven’t even gotten to the best part yet.

I stared at the bags in our hands. I had more clothes than I could possibly need thanks to Scarlett.

“There’s still more?”

Her lips curled. “Of course there is. Come on.”
