At first, there was silence, and then pandemonium erupted.

People screamed, running for the doors where there was brightness. I barely managed to drag myself over to the side to avoid being trampled upon by terrified customers.
Scarlett found her way to my side, her hands tightly wrapped around my bicep, keeping me close to her.
“Shouldn’t we be leaving?” I asked but she shook her head.
“We are safer in here than we are out there. We don’t know what caused this. It’s smarter if we just stay put, okay?”
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t panicking.
In that moment, nothing else mattered, not my past, not the revenge, I just wanted to fucking live.
I wasn’t sure how long we stayed there, listening to the screams of people coming from outside, but the lights finally came on and I let out a ragged breath.
The store was a mess. Mannequins had fallen over, and only a few people remained. We stood slowly, assessing the damage. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
I turned to Scarlett. “Can we leave now?”
She nodded. “Sure, after we get what we came for.”
We didn’t spend up to five minutes in that store before leaving and thankfully, we headed straight for the car. If we had to go to one more place, I would’ve lost my mind.
As we got closer to the car, I couldn’t help but notice two men standing far enough from the car that they weren’t obvious, but close enough that it raised my hackles.
“Who are those people?” I asked suddenly, slowing in my tracks.
“What people?” it took her a second before she noticed them, and once she did, she rolled her eyes. “That is what happens when Kai is worried. They’re guards.”
“What are they doing here? Was there an accident? Are people hurt?”
“If people were hurt, there would be ambulances and doctors. He sent those for you.”
I blinked.
It felt like I was in a bubble, because her words didn’t settle immediately, and once they did, I was left feeling confused.
“Why would they be for me? I’m not hurt.”
“He doesn’t know that. All he knows is that there was an earthquake and you were in the building. It’s probably my fault, he tried to mind link me but I didn’t answer. I was more focused on staying alive.”
The guards noticed us at that moment and headed straight for They were both tall and domineering, with the same suffocating aura that all lycans carried. They had weapons strapped to their sides and I knew for a fact there were more that
were concealed.
“Are you alright?” one of them asked and I nodded slowly. “Theng has asked that we escort you back to the pack house.”
I didn’t bother arguing, I knew there was no use. They took the gs from Scarlett and 1, loaded them into the car and drove

us back in silence. I didn’t bother trying to make conversation, something told me that they wouldn’t be so eager to join in. They were completely stoic, and if not for the rise and fall of their chests, I would’ve assumed they were statues,
We arrived at the pack house in record time, and one of them offened the door for me.
“The Alpha is waiting inside,” he said, and without another word he made his way over to the trunk to get the bags.
“Why do they call him both Alpha and King?” I asked Scarlett as he appeared at my side. “I noticed it earlier but I thought it was a slip up.”
“He’s both. He asked the pack to call him Alpha, but sometimes they still call him king out of respect.”
“Which does he prefer?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t think he cares about that kind of stuff.”
I had a thousand more questions, but before I could ask, she cut me off.
“I’d love to answer your questions later, but right now, you have very anxious mate waiting inside and he is blowing up in my head. I’m going to have a headache later if you don’t go to him.”
Nerves erupted inside of me.
I didn’t know the first thing about dealing with a worried mate. I never had someone worry about me like this before, even my father.
I forced my shaky legs to move forward, past the guards and the maids who were watching me, and into the building. I didn’t have to ask where Kai was, because I could smell him. I followed the scent into the living room until I found him standing there with his back to me.
not
He knew the moment I walked in because he stopped pacing instantly. He turned to me, and I saw relief crash into him. His hand twitched by his side, but he fisted it and shoved it into his pockets.
“He wants to hold you,” my wolf said to me. “He’s holding himself back.”
“You can’t assume that.”
She snorted. “It’s so obvious, even a blind person would see it. Go to him.”
“No. We have an arrangement, and it doesn’t include this.”
“Don’t be so selfish. He sent guards to get you when he thought you were in danger.”
She cut off our conversation immediately and receded into the corner of my mind.
“Are you hurt?” Kai asked, snapping my attention back to him.
I shook my head. “We were inside when it happened. Do you know what caused it?”
