It was a miracle that she managed to relax in my hold and I was enjoying every second of it, despite the fact that it was pure torture. She smelled heavenly. Her scent was a mix of something floral and soft that I couldn’t quite put my finger on, but it suited her.

As we stood by the window, my hand on her hips, I had to fight the urge to claim her, to sink my teeth into her soft neck and watch as my mark bloomed on her neck. Every fiber of my being screamed at me to make her mind, but she wasn’t ready.

I turned to the intruder, pushing down the annoyance at having Daisy on the other side of the room.

My brows rose when I realized who was standing in front of me.

To what do I owe the pleasure, counsellor?

Alaric was head of the counsellors. He had been since I was a child. He advised my father, and it was only right that he would advise me too. He was an older man, with greying hair and sharp dark eyes that always seem to bore deep into my soul. He was like second father to me; someone I could always count on to give good advice.

He wore long robes every single day. I’d never seen him in anything different. Today, his robe was a deep blue, and he had his hands folded in front of him.

Sorry to interrupt, your majesty,he drawled.

From the small smile he was trying to hide, I could tell that he wasn’t sorry at all. Still, I had to push my anger aside, because Alaric was one of the few people who didn’t interrupt me unnecessarily. It was why he had access to my floor.

Is something wrong?I asked, but he didn’t respond.

I followed his gaze to realize that he was staring at Daisy, and before I could control myself, a low, warning growl left my lips. His brows rose, half in shock and half in fear.

To his credit, he took a step back and tore his eyes away from my mate, showing me that he meant no harm.

I thought the rumors were false. It’s not often that I’m proven wrong.” He bowed to Daisy. It is a pleasure to meet you.

My mate looked at me, eyes wide and unsure, but I stayed silent. If this was a test, like I assumed it was, then I couldn’t interfere. I gave her a curt nod, a small sign of encouragement.

It’s nice to meet you too,she said finally, her voice soft. I’m Daisy.”

Alaric, my lady. I will be one of your advisors.”

There’s more of you?

At that, Alaric laughed, before turning to me. I like her.”

From him, that was practically a stamp of approval. I’d be lying I said I didn’t feel some sense of relict.

Where are you from, Daisy?

She hesitated for a moment, shuffling on her feet, and I could inediately tell that she didn’t want to talk about it so I stepped in.

Why are you here, Alaric?

He tore his eyes away from Daisy, but I could see the wheels tung in his mind. He’d noticed me stepping in, and I knew he wouldn’t stop until he was able to figure out why, but that was problem for another day.

There have been some new developments that I thought you should hear firstHe paused for a moment, glancing over at Daisy. It concerns the things you asked me to look into.

I knew instantly that he was talking about the Northern pack.

There were few people I trusted with the information of the case I was building against them and Alaric was one of them. The last thing I wanted was for someone to tip them off, it was why I’d asked for so much secrecy and discretion.

I looked over at Daisy.

If I agreed to speak with Alaric, there was no telling how long weld be here. I’d promised her lunch. I wanted to do right by her, but this was important.

I’ll meet you in the council room,I said finally.

Alaric nodded, bowing me to me, and then to Daisy, before walking out of the room. As soon as the door shut behind him. I turned to her.

I have to go into a meeting,I told her.

I watched her face, searching for any sign of displeasure or sadness, but she was unreadable. For a full minute, she didn’t speak.

Okay, she said finally. Someone is going to take me back, right I don’t know my way around.

It was like she’d erected a wall between us in those short minutes Getting to her would be much harder than I initially anticipated, and my actions hadn’t helped one bit.

Scarlett will come over to get you. She’s supposed to take you shopping anyway.

Okay then. Do I wait for her outside or-

It’s okay if you’re upset,I cut her off. I promised to spend the day with you and I’m canceling last minute. You can be annoyed with me.

She stared at me for what felt like forever. I’m not annoyed.
