There was a soft knock on my door a few hours later when the sun had already begun to set. I didn’t respond, but that didn’t stop Kai from opening the door and making his way inside.

I sat at the edge of the bed, staring straight out the window while pretending not to see him approaching the bed until he was directly in front of me.

“We have to leave soon,” he said softly. “Have you changed your mind about the guards?”

I finally looked up at him. He was dressed from head to toe in black and I could see at least three different weapons carefully hidden on his body. He looked poised for a fight.

“No, I haven’t.”

I turned away again, but he grabbed my chin and forced me to look at him. “I am doing this for your safety. We don’t know what-”

“You’ve explained it to be multiple times already, Kai. I heard you. I don’t need another lecture.”

He sighed, running his hands through his hair in frustration. “I wish I had longer to stay here and talk, but I don’t. I’m not going to apologize for this decision because I did what I thought was best. Hopefully, you’ll understand.”

He pressed a kiss to my forehead, and without another word, he walked out of the room. It wasn’t until I heard the click of the lock that I realized what he’d done. I rushed to my feet, pulling at the door knob, but it was locked tightly.

I let out a groan of frustration.

I could break it down easily, but that would only bring more questions. A human wasn’t supposed to have that kind of strength.

“You locked me in,” I said accusingly down our bond. “Mates don’t do that to each other.”

“I need to make sure you don’t come after us. I’ll come get you once it is over.”

“Kai, if you leave, I will never forgive you.”

“I love you.”

He ended the mind link without another word and I held back a scream.

I paced around the room, trying to find a way out, but the windows had bars on them and I didn’t have the number of anyone in this inn. Even the intercom wasn’t working, so there was no way I could call Darla for help.

I sat resigned at the edge of the bed. Kai’s wall was down, and so was Damien. There was no way to know what was happening unless someone got terribly hurt.

I tried picking the lock, but when the hairpin snapped, I screamed/The frustration had bubbled up so much inside of me that my hands shook.

“Hello?”

I froze when I heard the voice.

“Is someone up here?”

The voice belonged to someone young… a woman.

Chapter 101

“I’m in here!” I yelled out feeling relief for the first time in the last thirty minutes.

I heard shuffling and the footsteps grew closer until they stopped right outside my door.

“I hope I’m not hallucinating.”

“You’re not,” I said softly. “I’m in here.”

I sighed when I heard the lock click. It was pulled open and I saw a young woman standing in front of me with furrowed brows. Her hair was pulled back into a single braid and she wore a short plaid dress with a duster hanging out of the pockets.

“What are you doing here?” she asked. “These rooms are out of commission.”

“My son locked me in here as a prank,” I lied. “He likes to run around and we found this place by accident.”

Her

eyes widened in understanding. “My nephew is like that too. Do you know your way back to your room?”

I nodded. “Thank you, but I was wondering if you could take me to Darla first?”

There was a hint of suspicion on her face. “Why? Is there something wrong with your stay here?”

“No, I just need to see her please.”

She nodded slowly. “Come with me.”

She led me down the stairs and I quickly realized that Darla had hid us in the attic, far away from the busy inn. People moved in and out, their voices overlapping and rising with the wind. I weaved past them, keeping my head down so I wasn’t recognized.

Darla’s office was on the ground floor, close to the back doors. The girl knocked once and after a soft response came from inside, she opened the door.

Darla sat up straighter when she saw me. “Thank you for bringing her. You can go now.”

The girl looked between Darla and I with a confused expression, but did as she was instructed. Once she was gone, Darla pulled me in and locked the door behind her.

“What the fuck are you still doing here? I thought you’d all left. I saw the cars leave. That’s the only reason I let them go up there.”

“Kai locked me in. He thought it wasn’t safe for me.”

She ran her hands through her hair with frustration. “Fucking hell. I don’t know what it is with you wolves and acting like women are made of fragile china. You can’t go back up there now. They’ll ask questions.”

“Good, because I don’t want to go back. I need to follow them.”

She raised a brow. “How do you plan to do that? They took the cars,

I stared at her. ‘
