I wasn’t sure what I expected when Darla mentioned her car, but it wasn’t a sleek grey car that flew like the wind.
“Can you reach any of them?” she asked, glancing at me briefly.
“Please keep your eyes on the road. I’d like to get there in one piece please.” I murmured, grabbing onto the edges of my
seat.
She rolled her eyes. “Focus, we don’t want to walk into an ambush.”
“Their walls are still down. Kai is blocking me out because he thinks I’m pissed at him.”
“Aren’t you?”
I shrugged.
That wasn’t important right now.
What mattered was making sure that they didn’t die before we got there. If the hunters got to them before us… I didn’t want to think about it.
“Can you reach his lycan?” I asked my wolf.
“I’ve tried. I’m completely blocked out from him. I hate it.”
“I do too, but focus, please. Can you reach anyone else!”
“Why don’t you try Scarlett?”
I cursed aloud before reaching for my phone.
Just because I was blocked out didn’t mean that Scarlett was. I dialed her number and when she didn’t pick up, I nearly screamed.
I called a second time, and she finally picked up.
“Hello?”
On a good day, I would not have ignored the fact that she was out of breath, but there were more important things right
now.
“I need you to mind link Kai or Damien right now.”
She was silent for a moment. “Why don’t you do it? Is everything okay?”
“They’re about to be ambushed and Kai blocked me out. Please, Scarlett, this is important.”
She cursed aloud. “I don’t know how well it will work over a long distance like this, but I’ll try my best. I’ll let you know if I reach them.”
She hung up the phone, but the swirling in my stomach hadn’t eased. I kept trying to reach my mate, trying to convey how worried I was, but I doubted he could feel me considering the lengths he went through to ensure that I couldn’t get to him.
“How far away are we?” I asked. “Can you drive a little faster?”
“I’m driving as fast as I can. The warehouses are on the opposite end of town.”

“I know you’re stressed right now, but this isn’t the time to rush me or yell, okay? The last thing either of us wants is to crash into a tree or a wall. I’m doing my best so please… relax.”
I knew she was right.
I bowed my head in shame. “I’m sorry.”
She didn’t say anything, but she squeezed my thigh in a comforting manner and hit the gas.
Scarlett didn’t call me back, so I assumed she was still trying.
I sent messages to Kai and Damien. I doubted they’d see it, but I kept sending them, hopefully a miracle would happen and one of the guards would see it instead.
The roads started to take on a dirty look, and the trees grew scarcer. More and more abandoned buildings began to pop up the closer we got to the street. I directed her as best as I could using the directions we got from the shopkeeper earlier.
The air smelled burnt… like metal and dust with something harsher. There was blood mixed with all of it, and my heart began to pound in my chest. Darla drove as far as she could until the smoke got so thick that she couldn’t drive.
“We may have to go on foot from here,” she said softly. She reached into her glove compartment and pulled out two masks. “Here, this will help a little.”
I took it with shaky hands and got out of the car.
The harsh air burned my eyes, but I kept moving. I wanted to call out for my mate, but the fear of being heard by someone I shouldn’t kept my lips closed.
The further we walked, the more pungent the smell of blood became. The smoke also cleared up a little and I saw the warehouse in the distance. It looked exactly like the one in the picture, only this time, there were a few people moving in front of it.
It was dark enough that they wouldn’t notice us, but that also meant that we couldn’t tell if they were friend or foe.
“We should go back,” she whispered. “It isn’t safe.”
“I’m not leaving until I know that Kai is safe.”
“They could be enemies. What if they kill us?”
“Then I die,” I snapped. “My mate is alive. I can feel the mating bond, but until I set my eyes on him, I am not leaving. Thank you for bringing me here, you don’t have to stay, but I’m not leaving.”
She stared at me in disbelief before scoffing. “You’re something else, not at all what I expected from a Queen.”
I didn’t know how to respond to that so I just kept moving.
We got closer, but I still couldn’t make out their features.
“We need to get-”
The sound of a twig snapping caused us both to freeze.
I turned just in time to see someone approaching us with his knife raised. He froze upon seeing me, recognition flashing through his eyes.
“Luna,” he said, bowing. “I didn’t know it was you. I’m so sorry.” He sheathed his weapon. “The Alpha said you weren’t here.
